About The Role

We are seeking an experienced and innovative AI professional to join our Enterprise AI organization at Humana. This role involves designing, developing, and evaluating autonomous agents capable of managing complex, real-world tasks in dynamic environments. The ideal candidate will have expertise in agent design, planning, and control mechanisms, contributing to the scientific and engineering foundations that ensure AI agents are reliable, interpretable, and aligned with human intent. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to develop goal-setting architectures, dynamic planning systems, and safety protocols to facilitate autonomous decision-making. Your contributions will directly impact the advancement of AI technologies that improve healthcare delivery, operational efficiency, and risk management within Humana’s diverse business segments.

Qualifications

- Master's Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Machine Learning, or a related field

- 4+ years of experience in research, ML engineering, or applied research roles focused on AI solutions

- 2+ years of experience leading the development of AI/ML systems

- Proficiency in SQL, Python, and data analysis/data mining tools

- Experience with machine learning frameworks such as Pytorch, Jax, LangChain, LangGraph, or AutoGen

- Experience working with large-scale, high-performance ML systems

- Knowledge of language modeling with transformers

- Experience with symbolic planning, causal reasoning, and model-based reinforcement learning

- Experience with large-scale ETL processes

- Demonstrated ability to ship autonomous or semi-autonomous agents in production or simulation environments

Responsibilities

- Architect goal-setting and goal decomposition mechanisms for autonomous agents operating in uncertain or open-ended environments

- Design and implement dynamic planning systems, including hierarchical planning, curriculum learning, and self-refinement loops

- Collaborate on memory, tool-use, and feedback-loop designs to enable multi-step, self-directed agent behaviors

- Develop evaluation frameworks to ensure AI alignment with human intent, consistency, and progress towards long-term objectives

- Prototype agents that interface with APIs, servers, search engines, databases, or real-world actuators to pursue goals safely and efficiently

- Explore mechanisms to detect and mitigate goal misalignment, undesirable looping behavior, or emergent strategies

- Work across teams to integrate safety, alignment, and operational reliability mechanisms into AI agents

- Maintain awareness of autonomy risk mitigation strategies, including off-switch protocols and bounded rationality approaches
