About The Role
This is a high-impact technical leadership position within the Optum Tech AI Transformation team. The successful candidate will support key enterprise initiatives, including the Real-Time AI Underwriting platform, by defining the technical vision and leading a team of AI/ML engineers. You will be responsible for setting strategic direction, overseeing the development of advanced AI solutions, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality, compliant, and ethically responsible AI products. Your role will involve mentoring team members, governing technical standards, and translating executive strategies into actionable engineering plans. As a bridge between technical execution and leadership, you will ensure that AI investments yield measurable, production-grade business outcomes. The role offers flexibility to work remotely within the U.S., with specific in-office requirements for candidates in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of software development experience with strong expertise in engineering and architecture
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in AI/ML project lifecycle, from ideation to deployment
- Proficiency in NLP techniques such as text processing, embeddings, transformers, NER, and conversational AI
- Experience with Generative AI, including RAG pipelines, prompt engineering, LLM integration, and fine-tuning methods like LoRA
- Knowledge or experience with Agentic AI development, multi-agent systems, and planning frameworks
- Deep proficiency in Python programming, with a focus on production-grade coding and standards enforcement
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deploy production-grade AI solutions encompassing classical ML, Generative AI, and multi-agent frameworks to solve complex business challenges responsibly and securely
- Own the AI/ML technical roadmap, defining architecture, selecting technologies, and establishing coding and engineering standards for the team
- Utilize enterprise-approved AI tools to streamline workflows, automate processes, and enhance development lifecycle efficiency
- Evaluate emerging AI trends and technologies such as foundation models, Agentic AI, and enterprise AI tooling to inform strategic innovation
- Lead initiatives to improve MLOps maturity, including model versioning, CI/CD pipelines, retraining automation, drift detection, and production monitoring
- Ensure solutions comply with enterprise policies, Responsible AI principles, and data privacy regulations such as HIPAA and PHI handling
- Mentor and develop a team of 5-10 AI/ML engineers, fostering a high-performance, self-managed culture through goal setting and regular feedback
- Conduct technical reviews of architecture, design, and code to uphold security, quality, and best practices
