About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Machine Learning Engineer to join our team in Hamburg, Germany. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for designing, building, deploying, and scaling machine learning systems that directly impact our product performance, user engagement, and overall business success. This position offers the unique opportunity to shape how AI and machine learning are integrated into our core operations, establishing best practices, and laying the foundation for scalable, reliable ML infrastructure. As a leader in this space, you will work closely with cross-functional teams including Data Science, Data Engineering, and Product Management to translate complex business challenges into innovative ML solutions. Your expertise will help us turn data insights into actionable systems, enabling smarter decision-making and automation across our platform. This role demands a strategic thinker with a hands-on approach, capable of managing the full ML lifecycle from conception to continuous improvement, fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of practical experience in machine learning, data science, or applied statistics with a focus on production systems
- Proficiency in Python and experience with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar
- Strong understanding of data pipelines, ETL/ELT workflows, SQL, and data warehousing solutions like Databricks
- Hands-on experience deploying, monitoring, and maintaining ML models in real-world environments
- Familiarity with AI tools and APIs, including large language models (LLMs) and platforms like Claude
- Deep knowledge of ML infrastructure, version control, and best practices for scalable architecture
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders
- Proven ability to work in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with a builder mentality
- Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or related field; advanced degrees preferred
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deploy scalable machine learning models that address core business and product challenges
- Manage the entire ML lifecycle, including experimentation, validation, deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement
- Collaborate with Data Scientists and Analysts to translate insights into practical, production-ready ML solutions
- Partner with Data Engineering teams to ensure robust data pipelines, feature engineering, and data quality
- Establish and promote best practices for ML development, deployment, and monitoring across the organization
- Define and build the foundational ML infrastructure, including tooling, architecture, and version control systems
- Translate ambiguous problems into structured ML solutions, making strategic trade-offs for optimal outcomes
- Stay abreast of industry trends and emerging technologies to continuously improve ML capabilities
