About The Role
The Staff AI Engineer role at Capital One offers an exciting opportunity to be at the cutting edge of AI and machine learning innovation. This position is responsible for designing, developing, and deploying scalable AI systems that enhance banking products and customer interactions. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers, to deliver AI-powered solutions that transform the way Capital One operates. The role involves working with advanced AI technologies such as foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and governance frameworks. The engineer will also contribute to shaping the technical vision and long-term roadmap of foundational AI systems, ensuring responsible and high-performance deployment. This remote-eligible position allows flexibility while maintaining a focus on building impactful AI solutions that serve millions of users, helping to reimagine the future of banking through responsible AI innovation.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or AI with at least 8 years of experience developing AI and ML algorithms or technologies, or Master’s degree with at least 6 years of relevant experience
- Minimum of 8 years of programming experience in Python, Go, Scala, or Java
- Experience deploying scalable and responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or private clouds
- Proven ability to architect, design, develop, and support complex AI systems
- Strong leadership skills with demonstrated experience mentoring engineering teams and influencing stakeholders up to the VP level
- Expertise in developing AI/ML algorithms, including LLM inference, similarity search, VectorDBs, guardrails, and memory systems
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field (preferred)
- Experience optimizing training and inference software to enhance hardware utilization, latency, throughput, and cost efficiency
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate complex AI concepts clearly to technical and non-technical audiences
- Passion for staying current with the latest AI research and applying innovative techniques in production environments
Responsibilities
- Partner with multidisciplinary teams to develop AI-powered products that improve operational efficiency and customer engagement
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components, including foundation models, large language models, similarity search, and governance frameworks
- Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Nemo Guardrails, PyTorch, and VectorDBs to build scalable solutions
- Invent and implement state-of-the-art optimization techniques for large-scale AI systems, focusing on performance, scalability, and cost reduction
- Contribute to the technical vision and strategic roadmap of Capital One’s foundational AI infrastructure
- Ensure responsible AI deployment by adhering to governance, observability, and ethical standards
- Mentor junior engineers and collaborate with stakeholders to translate business needs into innovative AI solutions
