The Role
We're looking for an experienced Systems Engineer to join a Defence tactical communications program at Victoria Barracks. Reporting to the Engineering Manager, you'll work on voice and data communication systems optimised for mounted and dismounted use, including tactical radio and range extension systems, with a strong focus on safety engineering and regulatory compliance.
This role suits someone who enjoys operating under limited direction — organising your own workflow, making independent technical decisions, and engaging directly with stakeholders on remediation efforts tied to safety and regulatory compliance. You'll be accountable for exercising assigned engineering authorities, developing and reviewing Safety Case Reports, Technical Risk Assessments and Hazard Logs, and ensuring delivered systems meet legislative and Defence safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform critical and complex engineering activities and provide advice in the field of systems engineering under limited direction
- Exercise assigned engineering authorities and any Technical Regulatory Authority delegations
- Develop, review and update Safety Case Reports, Technical Risk Assessments and Hazard Logs in compliance with relevant safety regulations
- Research, apply and contribute to technical engineering reports, briefs, presentations and documentation for review
- Assess technical and design packages, including scoping, planning and reviewing, providing recommendations for consideration
- Analyse whether delivered materiel meets requirements and legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks
- Ensure safety aspects of Defence materiel systems are considered and incorporated into engineering activities
- Build and sustain positive working relationships with team members, actively participating in team and group activities
- Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders via reports, correspondence, calculations and presentations
Required
- Current NV1 security clearance
- Registration (or ability to obtain prior to commencement) as a Professional Engineer in electrical engineering under the Professional Engineers Registration Act 2019
- Technically Proficient (TP) Level 4 — an accredited four-year engineering degree plus a minimum of three years' relevant engineering experience (e.g. RF Communications)
- Good knowledge of network/communication engineering architecture
- Experience in Defence Safety Engineering practices, including compliance, Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Safety Case development
- Experience with Configuration Management and ASDEFCON deliverables
- Experience managing multiple stakeholders across Defence, Industry and Capability Management organisations, including reporting to senior/Director-level stakeholders
- Experience supporting electronic systems and OEM software solutions, with knowledge of electronics, networking technologies and vendor-specific platforms
- Previous ADF tactical communications and/or COMSEC experience, and Chartered Professional Engineer status highly regarded
Salary
$85,703 - $90,703 (incl. Super)
