Role Overview
The Senior Application Solution Designer is responsible for designing stable, scalable and effective IT solutions within the organization's application landscape. The role focuses on translating business requirements and user stories into detailed solution and integration designs while ensuring alignment with established enterprise architecture principles and guidelines.
The Solution Designer works across individual and multiple applications, understanding dependencies, data flows, interfaces and interactions throughout the business value chain. The role requires close collaboration with Architects, Product Owners, Business Analysts, Developers, Agile Teams and other technical/business stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
1. Solution & Application Architecture
- Design IT solutions in accordance with defined architecture principles, standards and guidelines.
- Focus on application architecture across one or multiple interconnected systems.
- Understand dependencies and interactions between applications within the overall value chain.
- Ensure proposed solutions fit into the existing IT application and infrastructure landscape.
- Contribute to the technical roadmap and identify opportunities for synergies and standardization.
- Make timely solution-design decisions while remaining within architectural boundaries.
2. Business Analysis & Requirements Engineering
- Refine, review and analyze business requirements.
- Challenge and influence requirements where necessary to ensure effective use of IT applications and infrastructure.
- Translate business requirements and user stories into detailed technical and functional solution designs.
- Work closely with Business Analysts and Product Owners to clarify requirements and acceptance criteria.
- Identify functional impacts across different applications.
3. Microsoft Dynamics 365 Solution Design
- Provide solution design and functional consulting expertise around Microsoft Dynamics 365.
- Understand business processes and map them to Dynamics 365 capabilities.
- Design solutions that integrate Dynamics 365 with other enterprise applications.
- Assess the impact of proposed changes on existing Dynamics 365 functionality, data and integrations.
- Support functional design decisions and recommend appropriate Dynamics 365 capabilities.
4. Integration & Technical Design
- Develop detailed integration designs covering:
- Application interfaces
- Interface specifications
- Data models
- Data flows
- Sequence flows
- System dependencies
- Interface changes
- Consider both functional and non-functional requirements.
- Ensure solutions provide appropriate scalability, reliability, security and maintainability.
- Work with development and engineering teams to validate technical feasibility.
5. Technology & Design Patterns
- Propose appropriate technologies, architectural approaches and design patterns.
- Combine engineering expertise from Agile/development teams with the overall solution architecture.
- Identify opportunities to modernize or improve existing solutions.
- Recommend technical stories that can be incorporated into the development backlog.
- Identify technical debt, refactoring opportunities and improvement areas.
6. Documentation
- Create comprehensive solution and integration design documentation.
- Document application interactions, interfaces, data models and technical decisions.
- Maintain solution-design documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure documentation remains accurate and aligned with the implemented solution.
7. IT Project Coordination
- Coordinate solution-design activities across different project teams.
- Work with developers, testers, architects and business stakeholders.
- Support planning and execution of solution-related project activities.
- Ensure dependencies between applications and teams are identified and managed.
8. Testing & Deployment Support
- Support testing activities by clarifying solution and integration designs.
- Assist development and testing teams in resolving design-related issues.
- Support deployment and implementation activities.
- Validate that implemented solutions align with the approved design.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues involving application interactions and integrations.
9. Continuous Improvement
- Identify refactoring and improvement opportunities across the application landscape.
- Analyze design-chain issues and technical dependencies.
- Discuss improvement priorities with the Product Owner.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of application architecture and solution design practices.
