# Principal Real-time Software Engineer

## About the Role

Raytheon, part of RTX, is seeking a Principal Real-time Software Engineer to join the Software Engineering Directorate’s Effectors Center in Tucson, Arizona. This technical role focuses on architecting, designing, implementing, testing, debugging, and deploying embedded real-time software for complex autonomous avionics systems involving firmware, FPGA, and hardware.

You will work within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) alongside cross-disciplinary engineers, Product Owners, Chief Engineers, management, and other stakeholders. The ideal candidate has experience developing and integrating embedded software for edge or embedded devices where hardware operation, time-critical functionality, reliability, mission assurance, and safety are important considerations.

## Key Responsibilities

* Architect, design, implement, test, and debug integrated embedded real-time software within heterogeneous systems involving firmware and hardware.

* Develop and integrate embedded software for autonomous avionics and complex hardware/software systems.

* Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to define and improve product concepts, implementation approaches, testability, and measurable quality.

* Support software development across the full lifecycle, including design, implementation, integration, testing, debugging, and deployment.

* Apply Lean and/or Agile engineering practices to develop reliable embedded software.

* Work with Product Owners, Chief Engineers, management, and Integrated Product Team members.

* Teach, coach, and mentor less experienced engineering staff.

* Contribute to proposals, preliminary design reviews, and critical design reviews.

* Work across product lines and collaborate with other engineering teams.

* Obtain required program access after joining the role.

## Required Qualifications

* Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related STEM field.

* Minimum of 8 years of prior relevant professional experience.

* Experience in at least two of the following areas:

* Embedded C++ software development.

* Embedded software security.

* Software architecture design and implementation.

* Experience using embedded real-time operating systems, such as:

* Green Hills.

* Integrity.

* Wind River VxWorks.

* Linux.

* Experience developing complex systems involving hardware, firmware, and software integration.

* Ability to obtain an Interim Secret-level U.S. government security clearance prior to the start date.

* Active and transferable U.S. government-issued security clearance required prior to start.

* Ability to obtain program access after starting.

* U.S. citizenship required because only U.S. citizens are eligible for the required security clearance.

## Preferred Qualifications

* Familiarity with rate monotonic theory, practices, and limitations.

* Familiarity with layered architectural principles and their limitations.

* Ability to read electrical schematics and relate them to software functionality.

* Experience reading firmware source code, such as VHDL or Verilog.

* Familiarity with assembly language in at least one processor or controller family.

* Experience using laboratory instruments, including:

* Power supplies.

* Digital multimeters.

* Oscilloscopes.

* Logic analyzers.

* Experience developing device drivers for bare-metal and/or operating system applications.

* Experience leading engineering teams delivering systems involving hardware and software integration.
