About The Role
The Senior Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Engineer at USAA is a pivotal member of our AI engineering team, responsible for developing and deploying advanced AI/ML solutions across various lines of business. This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge projects such as sentiment analysis and agentic AI applications, enhancing USAA’s ability to deliver superior service to its members. The engineer will be involved in all phases of the machine learning lifecycle, including data preprocessing, model training, API development, and building scalable data pipelines.
This position requires a highly skilled professional who can contribute to innovative AI initiatives, influence technical strategies, and mentor junior team members. The role is based in San Antonio, TX, or Plano, TX, with a requirement to work in the office four days a week. USAA does not offer relocation assistance for this position, and remote work is not available outside the specified locations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience (minimum 4 years).
- At least 6 years of experience in machine learning engineering, data engineering, or software development with a focus on data solutions.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, SQL, Java, and experience with data engineering tools.
- Hands-on experience in end-to-end delivery of AI/ML solutions, including data pipeline creation, model development, and deployment.
- Strong understanding of ML Ops principles and automation workflows.
- Experience working with cloud platforms like AWS, GCP, or similar, and managing infrastructure components.
- Technical leadership experience, including mentoring junior team members.
- Knowledge of data science principles, stochastic modeling, and advanced mathematical techniques.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with data scientists and business partners to develop and implement machine learning models aligned with organizational goals.
- Provide technical feedback and guidance within the ML community, ensuring best practices are followed.
- Lead the entire machine learning engineering lifecycle, including analysis, solution design, data pipeline development, testing, deployment, and application integration.
- Configure, manage, and optimize AI/ML infrastructure in cloud and on-premises environments, including AWS, GCP, and graph databases.
- Work with architects to define and influence ML model implementation patterns in complex environments.
- Design and develop complex technical solutions for AI, GenAI, and machine learning applications, creating prototypes and proof-of-concept demonstrations for leadership.
- Mentor team members, fostering technical growth and knowledge sharing.
- Identify and mitigate risks associated with AI/ML initiatives, ensuring compliance with policies and standards.
