About the Role
BMW Group is seeking a Senior Applied AI / ML Engineer to help develop and optimize next-generation AI models for the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. You will work within an international team focused on edge GenAI and machine learning, contributing to model engineering, training pipelines, evaluation, and efficient deployment on target hardware. The role combines applied machine learning expertise with practical knowledge of model compression, performance optimization, and edge-device constraints.
Responsibilities
- Select and adapt foundation models for voice assistant and intelligent mobility applications.
- Build clean, reproducible pipelines for model training, fine-tuning, and evaluation.
- Optimize AI and ML models using quantization, pruning, and knowledge distillation techniques.
- Collaborate with performance engineers to develop hardware-aware model variants.
- Monitor and optimize latency and memory performance against defined hardware budgets.
- Develop evaluation suites and analyze model behavior using statistical methods.
- Document model architecture, design decisions, trade-offs, and model cards.
- Support AI development processes that meet audit, compliance, and quality requirements.
- Collaborate with international, cross-functional teams to deliver production-ready AI solutions.
Qualifications
- University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Several years of professional experience in applied machine learning and model engineering.
Required Skills
- Strong proficiency with PyTorch and Transformers.
- Hands-on experience with model compression, alignment, and fine-tuning.
- Experience working with small GenAI and machine learning models.
- Strong understanding of AI model evaluation and statistical analysis.
- Practical knowledge of edge-device limitations, including RAM, bandwidth, cache, and cold-start performance.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent cross-functional communication abilities.
- Professional proficiency in English.
Preferred Skills
- Experience developing AI solutions for edge devices.
- Knowledge of hardware-aware machine learning optimization.
- Experience with voice assistants or conversational AI.
- Knowledge of German is an advantage.
- Strong hands-on approach and willingness to work on emerging AI technologies.
