About the Role
We are looking for a Backend Engineer – AI / GenAI to design, build, deploy, and operate secure backend services supporting AI, machine learning, and generative AI solutions for government systems and digital services.
You will work closely with product, data, cybersecurity, DevOps, platform, and business teams to translate operational requirements into reliable, production-ready solutions. This role is suited for a proactive and resourceful engineer with strong backend fundamentals and an interest in building secure, scalable systems that enable AI-powered applications.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs supporting AI, machine learning, generative AI, and other intelligent digital services.
- Build backend components for LLM applications, RAG pipelines, prompt workflows, model integrations, evaluation pipelines, and enterprise system integrations.
- Translate business and operational requirements into practical solution designs, technical specifications, and implementation plans.
- Develop and integrate services using Python, APIs, databases, AI/ML frameworks, and cloud-based components.
- Conduct testing and evaluation of AI-enabled solutions for accuracy, reliability, robustness, safety, bias, and fitness-for-purpose.
- Implement responsible AI controls including guardrails, access controls, audit logging, human oversight, and explainability measures.
- Work with DevOps, cybersecurity, data, and platform teams to securely deploy solutions within approved government and cloud environments.
- Monitor production solutions for performance degradation, model drift, hallucination risks, operational failures, and security issues.
- Support security reviews, vulnerability assessments, remediation activities, compliance requirements, and technical documentation.
- Troubleshoot and optimise solutions across development, UAT, staging, and production environments.
- Maintain appropriate monitoring, logging, testing, and operational support practices for production AI applications.
Requirements
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- 1–2 years of relevant experience in backend/software engineering, AI engineering, machine learning engineering, data science, or a related technical role.
- Strong programming skills in Python, with hands-on experience developing backend services, APIs, integrations, or application components.
- Experience or practical exposure to LLMs, prompt engineering, embeddings, vector databases, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), or AI agent workflows.
- Familiarity with commonly used AI/ML libraries, frameworks, and model APIs.
- Understanding of data preparation, model evaluation, MLOps/LLMOps, monitoring, logging, and production support.
- Experience with cloud environments such as AWS, GCC, or other enterprise cloud platforms.
- Familiarity with CI/CD, DevSecOps, Git, automated testing, monitoring, and logging.
- Good understanding of application security, data protection, privacy, AI governance, and responsible AI principles.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across application, integration, data, model, and infrastructure layers.
- Good communication and documentation skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

- Experience with responsible AI frameworks, AI safety testing, model evaluation, red teaming, or AI risk assessments.
- Exposure to AWS AI/ML services, Government Commercial Cloud (GCC), SHIP-HATS, GitLab CI/CD, or similar secure delivery platforms.
- Experience with enterprise monitoring, log analytics, security monitoring, or automated AI evaluation pipelines.
- Experience working within Agile, cross-functional engineering teams.
