We are a well-established underground utility company seeking an experienced Construction Superintendent to lead underground utility and heavy civil construction projects throughout South Florida. This is a hands-on field leadership role for someone who can plan and direct daily operations, coordinate crews and subcontractors, maintain production, and enforce safety and quality requirements from mobilization through project completion.
The successful candidate will have substantial field experience with stormwater and neighborhood improvement projects, sewer and force-main installation, excavation and trenching, dewatering, shoring, roadway work, and related municipal infrastructure construction. Experience with directional drilling, shafts, cofferdams, tunneling, or jack-and-bore operations is a plus.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily field operations, crews, equipment, materials and subcontractors.
- Lead daily morning meetings and communicate the day’s work plan, production goals, hazards and crew assignments.
- Train, direct and evaluate field employees; reinforce performance expectations and promptly communicate staffing or disciplinary concerns to management and Human Resources.
- Review plans, specifications, schedules, permits and project requirements before and during construction.
- Direct underground utility installation, excavation, trenching, shoring, dewatering, backfill, compaction and restoration activities.
- Coordinate with project managers, foremen, inspectors, engineers, owners, utility representatives and other stakeholders.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Florida and local requirements, including municipal and county permits, inspections, right-of-way requirements, environmental controls and project-specific agency standards.
- Oversee stormwater and erosion-control measures, including compliance with applicable SWPPP requirements and protection of inlets, waterways and surrounding property.
- Set daily production goals, monitor progress and communicate schedule, manpower, equipment and material needs promptly.
- Coordinate the timely ordering and delivery of required equipment, tools and materials.
- Support the project manager in maintaining the project schedule and controlling labor, equipment and material costs.
- Conduct pre-task planning and safety meetings; enforce company safety rules, PPE requirements, and site specific plans.
- Implement jobsite hurricane and severe-weather preparation, including securing equipment and materials, protecting open excavations, maintaining drainage and dewatering, and coordinating safe shutdown and restart activities.
- Verify that excavations, trench protection, confined-space work and equipment operations are performed safely and in accordance with applicable requirements.
- Work with project management to design and implement required MOT.
- Identify conflicts, changed conditions and potential delays early; document and elevate issues before they affect safety, cost or schedule.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, photographs, quantities, delivery records, time information and other required field documentation.
- Monitor workmanship and verify that work conforms to plans, specifications and quality standards.
- Protect existing utilities and coordinate locates, utility verification and safe excavation practices.
- Lead by example, hold crews accountable and stop work when an unsafe condition exists.
Required qualifications
- At least 5 years of on-site supervisory experience in heavy civil or underground utility construction.
- Demonstrated experience supervising storm water and neighborhood improvement projects, sewer, force-main or comparable underground infrastructure projects.
- Strong knowledge of excavation, trench protection, shoring, dewatering, pipe installation, testing, backfill and restoration practices.
- Working knowledge of South Florida municipal and county permitting, inspection and environmental requirements, including stormwater and erosion-control obligations.
- Experience preparing active construction sites for hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rainfall and flooding conditions.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, profiles, specifications, shop drawings and project schedules.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to organize multiple crews and subcontractors while maintaining safety, quality and production.
- Strong leadership, organization, decision-making and problem-solving skills, with the ability to motivate crews and address field issues promptly.
- Clear, professional communication and dependable documentation skills.
- Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in South Florida conditions and travel among projects in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties.
- Ability to work early mornings, nights, weekends, overtime or emergency schedules when project requirements call for them.
Preferred qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field.
- Construction management or superintendent certification.
- OSHA 30-hour Construction certification.
- Competent Person training for excavation and trenching.
- Current first-aid and CPR certification.
- Confined space, MOT/traffic-control, or related construction safety training.
- Experience using project scheduling or construction-management software.
- Experience working on municipal, county, state or federally funded infrastructure projects.

Physical and work requirements
This position regularly works at active construction sites and requires prolonged standing, walking and sitting; walking on uneven terrain; climbing; bending; and entering field work areas. The employee must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, wear required PPE, work around heavy equipment and traffic, and perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
