Our organization is seeking an experienced Director of Accounting to lead the accounting and financial operations and report to the Senior Director of Finance. This strategic leadership role is responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, overseeing the accounting team, and providing financial insights that support organizational objectives.
The Director of Accounting will serve as a trusted business partner to senior leadership, balancing hands-on accounting oversight with financial planning, analysis, and process improvement initiatives. This is a contract-to-hire position that is onsite in Pittsboro, NC.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Operations & Accounting Leadership
- Lead all day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll oversight, general ledger maintenance, cash management, account reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close processes.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting while maintaining the integrity of accounting records.
- Oversee accounting department workflows, priorities, and performance.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports.
- Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and financial models.
- Lead monthly financial reviews with department leaders, providing variance analysis and actionable recommendations.
- Analyze financial results and trends to support strategic decision-making and operational improvements.
Compliance & Internal Controls
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and applicable regulations.
- Establish, monitor, and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Manage financial risk through effective controls and oversight.
- Ensure accurate recordkeeping and compliance with reporting requirements.
Audit & Strategic Support
- Coordinate annual financial audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
- Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support executive decision-making, organizational initiatives, and long-term planning.
- Partner with leadership on strategic projects, capital planning, and financial performance improvement efforts.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop accounting team members through coaching, training, and performance management.
- Foster a collaborative, high-performance culture focused on accountability and continuous improvement.
- Delegate responsibilities effectively while ensuring departmental objectives are achieved.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Progressive accounting leadership experience with responsibility for financial operations and team management.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls.
- Experience overseeing month-end and year-end close processes, audits, and financial statement preparation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present financial information to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated leadership experience with a track record of developing and mentoring staff.
- Self-starter who takes ownership of responsibilities, anticipates needs, and works independently while collaborating effectively across the organization.
Preferred
- CPA designation.
- Experience within healthcare, senior living, hospitality, nonprofit, or other service-oriented organizations.
- Experience with ERP systems and financial reporting tools.
- Proven success improving accounting processes, reporting capabilities, and internal controls.
