About The Role
The Lead AI Engineer (MLX) at Capital One plays a pivotal role in advancing the company's artificial intelligence and machine learning initiatives. This position involves designing, developing, and deploying scalable AI systems that transform how the bank interacts with its customers and operates internally. As a key member of the Intelligent Foundations and Experiences (IFX) team, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers, research scientists, product managers, and technical program managers to create innovative AI-powered products. Your expertise will contribute to building responsible, efficient, and high-performance AI infrastructure, enabling the company to stay at the forefront of AI technology in the banking industry.
In this role, you will be responsible for developing foundational AI models, optimizing large language models (LLMs), and implementing state-of-the-art techniques to improve system performance, scalability, and cost-efficiency. You will also contribute to the long-term technical vision and roadmap of AI systems at Capital One, ensuring alignment with business goals and responsible AI practices. Your work will directly impact millions of customers by enabling real-time, personalized, and secure banking experiences.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical background combined with a passion for innovative AI solutions. A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, along with at least 4 years of experience in developing AI and machine learning algorithms, is required. Alternatively, a Master’s degree with at least 2 years of relevant experience is acceptable. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Java, Scala, or Go is essential, with at least 4 years of hands-on coding experience. Candidates with extensive experience deploying scalable AI solutions on cloud platforms like AWS, Google Cloud, or Azure, and expertise in AI technologies such as LLM inference, vector databases, and model optimization techniques, are highly preferred. A deep understanding of hardware-software integration, AI governance, and observability practices will be advantageous.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to deliver AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions and operational efficiency.
- Design, develop, test, deploy, and maintain AI software components, including foundation model training, large language model inference, similarity search, and governance frameworks.
- Leverage open-source and SaaS AI technologies such as Huggingface, AWS Ultraclusters, Nemo Guardrails, PyTorch, and VectorDBs to build scalable solutions.
- Invent and implement cutting-edge LLM optimization techniques to improve system performance, reducing latency and costs while increasing throughput.
- Contribute to the strategic vision and long-term roadmap of AI systems, ensuring alignment with responsible AI principles and business objectives.
- Monitor, evaluate, and improve AI models through experimentation, governance, and observability practices to ensure reliability and compliance.
- Stay updated with the latest research and innovations in AI and machine learning, applying new techniques judiciously in production environments.
