## About the Role
Amazon Leo is seeking an Embedded Software Development Engineer to build and scale VirtSat, the Leo Virtual Satellite Simulation platform. VirtSat enables developers and software pipelines across Leo to create, provision, and test virtual satellites, ground gateways, customer terminals, and TT&C antennas on EC2 bare-metal infrastructure using KVM/QEMU.
In this role, you will own the Graviton virtualization layer, including virtual machine lifecycle management, subsystem provisioning, software deployment, networking, and fault recovery. You will work across cloud infrastructure, embedded Linux, virtualization, and satellite operations to build the platform used to test Leo satellite software releases before launch.
## Key Responsibilities
* Own the Graviton bare-metal virtualization layer, including KVM/QEMU VM management, subsystem start/stop, health monitoring, and fault recovery.
* Develop embedded software using Rust, C, C++, or other modern programming languages.
* Write device drivers and system applications for satellite systems running on virtual hardware.
* Develop software that interacts with microcontrollers and emulated hardware peripherals, including FPGAs, HSMs, and sensors.
* Build and maintain custom AMI pipelines that pre-configure satellite dependencies, reduce provisioning time, and prevent dependency drift.
* Develop and optimize provisioning scripts to deploy satellite software, firmware, certificates, and LEP images onto emulated LRUs through SSM.
* Implement plugin framework extensions for new LRU types, including satellites, GGMAs, GTMAs, and customer terminals.
* Build network virtualization between VMs using WireGuard, inter-entity networking, and TT&C link emulation.
* Optimize boot time and provisioning latency for QEMU-based satellite instances.
* Debug issues across host OS environments such as Ubuntu/ARM64, guest OS environments such as LEP/Yocto, and QEMU emulation.
* Develop fidelity improvements including HSM cryptographic emulation, EFUSE emulation, CAN bus simulation, and error-injection frameworks.
* Collaborate with software and hardware teams on board bring-up and integration testing.
## Required Qualifications
* 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience.
* Experience with Linux systems programming using C, Rust, Python, or Bash.
* Experience with virtualization or emulation technologies such as KVM, QEMU, Docker, or similar.
* Familiarity with embedded Linux, including boot processes, systemd, device drivers, or Yocto/Buildroot.
* Experience with shell scripting and system automation.
* Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.
* Must meet applicable export control requirements: U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident/current Green Card holder, or lawfully admitted to the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
## Preferred Qualifications
* Experience with ARM64 architecture or AWS Graviton instances.
* Experience with QEMU device emulation, QMP protocol, or custom QEMU plugins.
* Experience writing device drivers or interacting with microcontrollers.
* Experience with network virtualization, including WireGuard, bridge networking, and TAP/TUN interfaces.
* Familiarity with satellite systems, hardware test environments, or simulation platforms.
* Experience with EC2 bare-metal instances and SSM for remote commanding.
* Experience with AMI/image-building pipelines such as EC2 Image Builder or Packer.
* Familiarity with certificate provisioning, secure boot, or HSM interfaces.
* Experience with Python packaging, including pip and virtualenv.
* Experience with container image management using ECR or Docker.
* Experience with Rust for systems programming.

## Compensation & Benefits
* **Base Salary:** $143,700–$194,400 annually for Redmond, Washington.
* Total compensation may include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs).
* Final compensation is determined based on experience, qualifications, and location.
