FULL-TIME TENURE TRACK FACULTY – ENGLISH

HAROLD WASHINGTON COLLEGE

Harold Washington College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, seeks an innovative, collaborative, and student-centered tenure-track English instructor who is committed to the mission of Harold Washington College. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about teaching on campus and serve as an active and engaged presence for students, faculty, and the college community. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teaches composition courses at all levels and may be assigned literature, journalism writing, and other English-designated courses as needed.

Uses innovative approaches to engage students.

-
Develops, reviews, and maintains currency in assigned area(s) of responsibility and curricula, responding to the needs of first-generation college students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

-
Prepares and evaluates clear and effective class assignments and/or examinations and provides feedback responsive to the needs and interests of diverse populations, promoting long-term growth and improvement.

-
Organizes and explains instructional materials in ways appropriate to students' abilities and learning strengths.

-
Develops and evaluates learning outcomes and student performance.

-
Employs a variety of teaching methods, including interdisciplinary content in the classroom, that engage students and encourage them to be motivated and critical self-learners.

-
Engages with and advocates for students in classroom and non-classroom settings.

-
Utilizes the online learning management system and thoughtfully integrates technology to support student learning and enhance the in-person classroom experience.

-
Demonstrates a strong commitment to campus engagement by maintaining an active presence on campus, participating in student-centered initiatives, and collaborating with faculty, staff, and students to support student success.

Participates in professional or shared governance committees and in departmental activities, such as development of departmental policies and procedures, maintenance of course outlines, peer evaluation, program review, student learning outcomes assessment, and other curricular development.

Helps students reach their academic, personal, and career goals and cultivates a safe environment that respects the diversity of individuals and ideas by modeling respect for all students and conveying confidence in every student’s ability to learn.

Adheres to City Colleges of Chicago board rules, policies, procedures, and code of ethics.

QUALIFICATIONS:

-
Master's Degree or Ph.D. in Composition/Rhetoric, English, Writing, Creative Writing, or related field required.

-
Community college teaching experience preferred and/or a clear understanding of the mission of the community college.

-
Experience in multi-modal approaches and student-centered pedagogy as well as in using technology in an educational setting.

-
Knowledge of current best practices, methods, research, and theories in the various levels of composition and working with first generation students of diverse backgrounds.

-
Experience designing and/or teaching curricula responsive to the needs and interests of diverse populations.

-
Demonstrated experience using and assessing student learning outcomes.

-
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to actively participate and effectively work with department colleagues and members of the college community.

-
Experience teaching journalism writing, media writing, or related coursework strongly preferred.

The salary range for this position is $58,000 - $65,000. Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education.

Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within six (6) months of hire.
