POSITION SUMMARY
We are currently recruiting for an Account Technician position. This full-time, on-site position is located in Chesapeake, Virginia and pays $17.62 per hour.
The Account Technician provides a combination of account support, clerical and administrative work, data entry, and front-desk customer service within the Commissioner of Revenue office. The position assists taxpayers with account inquiries and billing adjustments, researches and processes account information, reviews supporting documentation, handles phone and in-person customer interactions, and completes related paperwork and recordkeeping. The role requires strong attention to detail, accuracy, computer skills, and the ability to manage both customer-facing responsibilities and technical clerical tasks in a fast-paced office environment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Research and evaluate complex clerical and technical taxpayer issues to determine appropriate account resolution.
- Accurately and efficiently enter, update, and edit taxpayer and account data in multiple applications.
- Provide exceptional customer service to taxpayers in person, by phone, and by email.
- Assist taxpayers with account inquiries, billing questions, and related concerns.
- Review and analyze documentation such as bills of sale, out-of-state registrations, and government paystubs to determine appropriate billing adjustments.
- Process and maintain account-related paperwork, forms, records, and documentation.
- Access multiple information sources to research account information and accurately respond to taxpayer inquiries.
- Prepare and maintain various reports, records, correspondence, and other documentation.
- Distribute incoming mail and correspondence to appropriate personnel.
- Utilize Microsoft Word and Excel for correspondence, reporting, data entry, and recordkeeping.
- Perform front-desk and general office functions as needed.
- Provide assistance at any of four designated office locations as needed.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES
- Strong data entry, clerical, and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Ability to professionally assist customers both in person and by telephone.
- Ability to interpret and apply Virginia State Code, City Ordinances, and departmental procedures.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and percentages.
- Effective time management and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to research account information and resolve customer questions accurately.
- Ability to manage paperwork, data entry, customer interactions, and other clerical responsibilities simultaneously.
- Ability to remain professional and calm under pressure.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- High school diploma or GED required.
- At least one year of bookkeeping, accounting, or related clerical experience required.
- Proficiency in 10-key, computer operations, typing, Microsoft Word, and Excel required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Standard hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (40 hours per week).
- May require occasional standing, bending, or lifting light office materials.
