Mid-Level Java Engineer | Sports Betting Startup | London
Please note: this role cannot provide visa sponsorship. Please do not apply if you require sponsorship.
I’m working on a great opportunity for a Mid-Level Java Backend Engineer to join a small, fast-moving engineering team building critical sports data services that support high-frequency decision-making.
This is a hands-on Java role where you’ll be working with live and historical sports data, third-party APIs, data modelling and downstream integrations — solving the messy, real-world problems that come with external data.
What you’ll bring:
- Computer Science degree
- 3+ commercial Java experience
- Spring Boot or similar modern backend experience
- Strong SQL / relational database skills
- Experience working with third-party APIs or external data feeds
- Solid understanding of data modelling and data quality
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
- A proactive, autonomous approach to delivery
- Good testing and code-review practices
- Comfortable working in a small, fast-moving engineering team
- Experience using modern AI coding tools
The tech
Java 21 | Spring Boot | PostgreSQL | JPA | Flyway | AWS SQS | WebFlux/Reactor | Bazel | Containers
You don't need to know everything — what matters is strong Java fundamentals, curiosity and the ability to get stuck into complex problems.
The role can be fully remote but you need to be based in UK.
If you're a Java engineer who enjoys working close to the data and wants a role with real ownership, autonomy and technical influence, I'd love to hear from you.
