Job Description
Our client is seeking an experienced General Foreman – Substation Construction to oversee field crews supporting the construction, expansion, and upgrade of electrical substations. In this role, you'll coordinate daily field activities, manage crews, uphold safety and quality standards, and ensure work is completed on schedule and to specification.
This is a traveling position supporting projects in multiple locations, with assignments ranging from several weeks to several months depending on project needs. You'll work closely with Superintendents, Project Managers, Construction Managers, subcontractors, and other trades, while mentoring Foremen, Journeymen, Apprentices, and other field personnel.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise field crews performing substation construction activities
- Coordinate daily work assignments, manpower, equipment, and materials
- Oversee new substation construction, expansions, upgrades, and retrofit projects
- Supervise installation of structural steel, bus systems, grounding systems, conduit, cable tray, equipment foundations, and electrical equipment
- Coordinate installation of transformers, breakers, switches, disconnects, control houses, and other substation equipment
- Read and interpret construction drawings, electrical drawings, specifications, one-lines, and project plans
- Ensure crews perform work according to project drawings, specifications, and applicable standards
- Conduct daily job briefings and communicate work plans and safety expectations to field personnel
- Coordinate with Superintendents, Project Managers, Construction Managers, subcontractors, and other trades
- Monitor project productivity and identify potential schedule or manpower issues
- Track completed work and provide daily progress updates
- Ensure proper tools, equipment, and materials are available to maintain productivity
- Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, and workmanship
- Participate in inspections, punch-list activities, testing preparation, and project closeout
- Mentor Foremen, Journeymen, Apprentices, and other field personnel
- Maintain housekeeping and organization throughout the jobsite
Required Experience/Skills
- 5+ years of experience in electrical or substation construction
- Previous experience as a General Foreman, Foreman, or senior field leader on substation projects
- Strong knowledge of high-voltage substation construction practices
- Experience supervising multiple crews and coordinating manpower
- Knowledge of grounding, conduit, structural steel, bus installation, equipment setting, and cable installation
- Ability to read construction drawings, electrical drawings, and project specifications
- Strong understanding of construction safety requirements and procedures
- Ability to communicate effectively with field employees and project leadership
- Strong leadership, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Valid driver's license required
- Must be willing and able to travel extensively (assignments may run several weeks to several months; flexibility needed on location, schedule, overtime, weekends, and extended rotations)
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience working on 69kV, 138kV, 230kV, 345kV, 500kV or similar high-voltage substations
- Experience with greenfield and brownfield substation projects
- OSHA 30 certification
- NCCER or electrical apprenticeship/journeyman credentials
- Experience working around energized substations and coordinating outage-related activities
- Experience overseeing crews performing equipment installation, grounding, steel erection, bus work, conduit, cable pulling, and terminations
Physical Requirements
- Ability to regularly stand, walk, climb, bend, and lift throughout the workday
- Ability to work around heavy equipment and active construction operations
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment as required
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions
Pay & Benefits Summary
- Salary: $100,000 – $130,000
- Per diem provided for travel assignments
