Platform Engineer | Sydney, Hybrid | Deeptech / Kubernetes / HPC / DevOps
I'm working with a Sydney-based deep-tech company whose products are already deployed and generating revenue.
They need a Platform Engineer to own the compute and tooling layer the rest of engineering and research builds on top of. That means keeping HPC clusters tuned, CI pipelines running cleanly across products and getting new Kubernetes environments stood up quickly whenever a research group needs compute in a hurry.
The user base spans pure researchers through to engineers building physical hardware, so the problems don't repeat much day to day, and there's real scope to shape how the platform is built as headcount and workload grow.
Platform Engineer Responsibilities
- Take ownership of HPC clusters, on-prem and in the cloud, designed for simulation and other specialised compute workloads.
- Build and look after CI/CD pipelines spanning multiple products and toolchains, covering source control, automated testing and deployment.
- Manage the internal platforms and developer tooling that run on Kubernetes.
- Help research teams get the most out of the compute they're given.
- Keep an eye on platform health and reliability.
- Bring infrastructure-as-code discipline
Platform Engineer Requirements
- Proven platform, DevOps or infrastructure engineering with strong Docker and Kubernetes
- Hands-on time with HPC or compute cluster environments
- Solid Linux administration and scripting in Bash and Python.
- Infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform, Ansible or similar.
- CI/CD tooling such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
- Comfortable with core networking services like DNS, DHCP and NTP.
- Strong cross-system troubleshooting, and the communication skills to work well with technical teams who aren't infrastructure people themselves.
- Scientific or research computing exposure, monitoring tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana or Datadog, and curiosity about advanced computing hardware are all a bonus
