BAS/BMS Controls Engineer
New York, NY
Our client is expanding its building controls capabilities across complex commercial and institutional environments throughout New York City and is looking for an experienced BAS/BMS Controls Engineer to play a key technical role in that growth. This is an opportunity to take ownership of sophisticated controls work from engineering and programming through startup and turnover, while working with Distech Controls, Tridium Niagara, and open-protocol building automation technologies. The right engineer will combine strong BAS design expertise with the practical field knowledge needed to turn control strategies into reliable, high-performing building systems.
This Role Offers:
- Competitive base compensation, based on experience.
- Exposure to technically challenging building systems and projects across New York City.
- Opportunities to deepen expertise through manufacturer training and certification support.
- A well-rounded employee benefits offering that supports personal well-being, financial security, and time away from work.
- A collaborative environment where your controls expertise will directly support project teams, field technicians, and successful system delivery.
Focus:
- Shape control architectures from mechanical plans and sequences, then translate them into dependable field-ready solutions.
- Build controller logic, operator graphics, and integration strategies for sophisticated commercial HVAC environments.
- Create coordinated controls submittals, drawings, and technical documentation that give project teams a clear path from design through turnover.
- Support startup and commissioning by diagnosing programming, sequence, communications, and integration challenges at the engineering level.
- Partner with project leadership and field technicians as the go-to engineering resource for complex BAS questions and implementation decisions.
- Evaluate equipment, product, and special system requirements, helping select practical controls solutions for each application.
- Contribute technical input to controls estimating and proposal development when engineering insight is needed during the preconstruction phase.
- Keep final records current, including field revisions, operating documentation, and control program information, while helping train end users at turnover.
Skill Set:
- Several years of directly relevant experience supporting the development and implementation of building automation or environmental control solutions within commercial settings.
- Practical experience working with industry-relevant building automation technologies, platforms, and associated control systems.
- Understand BACnet, Modbus, and LON communications and know how to apply automatic temperature control concepts within BAS design.
- Use AutoCAD and Microsoft Visio confidently to develop controls drawings, layouts, and system documentation.
- Hold a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline, or offer equivalent practical BAS/BMS design and programming expertise.
- Read and interpret mechanical, electrical, and architectural drawings, specifications, equipment schedules, and sequences of operation.
- Ability to reliably support on-site project needs across multiple locations within the assigned territory. An NYC SST-62 card is required by the start date or must be obtained beforehand.
- Communicate clearly, organize multiple technical assignments, and work effectively with project managers, technicians, engineers, and commissioning stakeholders.
