Title: Senior DevOps Engineer (AWS)
Time: Full-Time
Location: Remote (US-based)
Compensation: $85,000–$140,000/year
The Company
Our client makes fundraising easy, fun, and highly effective by motivating kids to read. They have helped thousands of schools, PTAs, PTOs, and libraries raise funds without selling products or relying on volunteers. Their mission is to empower schools and libraries with the tools they need to fundraise effectively.
Role Overview
Our client is looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer with 4+ years of hands-on AWS experience to take ownership of cloud infrastructure across multiple AWS accounts and bring it up to modern standards.
As the first dedicated DevOps hire, you will consolidate a multi-account AWS environment, strengthen the company's security posture, maintain high availability, and prepare systems to scale during periods of heavy traffic. The ideal candidate is proactive, self-directed, comfortable taking ownership without extensive oversight, and actively uses AI tools in their day-to-day DevOps workflow. Experience with PHP and Laravel is a strong plus, as the role may gradually expand into application-level work as the infrastructure stabilizes.
Key Responsibilities
• Own and consolidate infrastructure across five AWS accounts, bringing consistency and structure to the environment.
• Strengthen IAM practices, including enforcing least-privilege access and improving security standards across AWS properties.
• Manage and maintain production EC2 infrastructure, including server updates and preparation for horizontal scaling during high-traffic periods.
• Build and improve observability using CloudWatch metrics, alarms, monitoring, and alerting to support high availability and prevent downtime.
• Improve the overall AWS security posture, including AWS Security Hub scores, WAF rules, and infrastructure updates.
• Support a seven-person engineering team and take ownership of infrastructure-related technical challenges.
• Over time, contribute to application-level work involving PHP and Laravel as infrastructure priorities stabilize.
Qualifications
• 4+ years of DevOps or infrastructure engineering experience with deep, hands-on AWS expertise.
• Proven experience managing production AWS infrastructure in a live environment.
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS infrastructure, particularly EC2, IAM, CloudWatch, networking, security, and scaling.
• Experience working with infrastructure-as-code and modern deployment practices.
• Active use of AI tools, such as Claude Code or similar tools, as part of your day-to-day engineering or DevOps workflow.
• Self-directed and comfortable taking ownership of infrastructure in an environment without an existing dedicated DevOps function.
Nice to Have
• Experience leading production incident response, including root-cause analysis and implementing downstream fixes.
• Experience with PHP and/or Laravel and an interest in supporting application-level work.
• Experience with technologies such as Aurora MySQL, RDS, Application Load Balancers, Auto Scaling Groups, S3, ElastiCache, AWS Organizations, WAFv2, Terraform, Docker, ECS, Route 53, GitLab CI/CD, CloudFormation, Systems Manager, Cloudflare, Apache, nginx, and Linux.
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
