About the Company:
The Virtual Superintendent is the production management platform behind a New Zealand-founded technology company. Built founder-led with no dedicated sales team, it now runs on most of Australia's largest infrastructure projects — including four of the five North East Link projects and every Suburban Rail Loop project — with Tier 1 contractors like John Holland and CPB as established users. More than $50 billion of Victorian project work is using it or about to, and tens of millions of dollars in real payment value move through the platform every day.
The company is 25+ people and growing sales 50% year on year — small-company autonomy backed by a Fortune 500 balance sheet. This is one of the first sales roles the company has ever hired for. There is no established sales function to slot into; you'd be helping build one from scratch.
The platform is fleet brand agnostic — it works across mixed equipment fleets regardless of manufacturer, which is why it carries its own brand. Customers don't have to change what they own to buy it.
About the Role:
The Sales Engineer is the technical heart of the account team, and spans the full customer lifecycle — not just the pitch. At the pre-sales stage, you own the proof: running product demonstrations that connect what the platform does to the specific job and pain of each user on site. Once the Sales Rep signs a new account, you stay involved — helping with implementation and onboarding, then providing ongoing product support, training, and identifying upsell and cross-sell opportunities as relationships deepen. You'll also be the one who finds the next opportunity inside an account already in the door — identifying additional users and use cases by using the relationships you build with the people actually using the product day to day.
Thousands of Tier 2, 3 and 4 contractors nationally already use The Virtual Superintendent as subcontractors on the Tier 1 megaprojects. They know the product and use it weekly — almost none of them are paying accounts yet. Your job is to make the value of converting to a full account undeniable, one demonstration and one use case at a time — and then make sure that value keeps compounding long after the deal is signed.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-sales
- Run product demonstrations tailored to the specific role and pain points of each prospect or user — engineers, foremen, commercial teams and project managers all see the platform differently
- Translate platform capability (geospatial and satellite data, machine telemetry, cost and production feeds) into concrete value for the person in front of you
- Support the Sales Representative through the pre-sales process as the technical voice in the room
Post-sale
- Help with implementation and onboarding once an account signs, working alongside the Onboarding Manager to get new users to real value fast
- Provide ongoing product support and training to keep users confident and engaged with the platform
- Identify and develop upsell and cross-sell opportunities inside existing accounts, using relationships formed on-site
Team and playbook
- Work as part of a small account team alongside a Sales Representative and an Onboarding Manager, rather than as a standalone technical resource
- Help build the technical sales and support playbook for a segment that hasn't been sold to before — there's no established script to follow
- Travel weekly within your city to visit customers, with roughly one day every two weeks in person with the wider team
To be successful in this role you will have:
- A Civil Engineering or Construction background, strong enough to speak credibly to site-based technical teams
- Experience in a solutions engineering, sales engineering, or technical pre-sales capacity, ideally in SaaS or hi-tech
- Comfort covering the full account lifecycle — equally at home running a pre-sales demo and supporting a customer post-implementation
- Genuine conviction that the industry deserves better information — this can be a long sell to people who've been burned by software before
- Comfort operating with autonomy and ambiguity in a small, fast-growing team, balanced with the stability of a global parent company
- A collaborative, team-oriented approach — energised by an emerging playbook rather than looking for a mature process to inherit
- Australian residency or valid AU work visa, and current residence in Australia (essential)
Compensation and deal profile:
- Variable compensation component, combining quarterly sales targets with behavioural KPIs that reflect the account being worked as a team rather than by one person alone
