Automation Engineer
X4 Life Sciences are partnered with an extremely progressive SaaS company within the digital health space, who are looking to add a QA Automation Engineer to their growing Quality Engineering team.
This is a great opportunity for a mid-level automation engineer to take ownership of end-to-end test automation, work closely with software and product teams, and play a key role in improving the quality and reliability of their platform.
The Role
You will be responsible for building, maintaining, and expanding automated test coverage using Playwright and TypeScript, while also supporting CI/CD quality gates and exploring new AI-powered approaches to software testing.
You will work closely with senior engineers, developers, and product teams to make sure quality is embedded throughout the development lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain end-to-end automated tests using Playwright and TypeScript
- Build scalable and maintainable test frameworks using approaches such as Page Object Model and reusable fixtures
- Investigate and resolve flaky tests to maintain a reliable automation suite
- Review automation code and provide feedback to other engineers
- Use AI tools such as GitHub Copilot and LLM-based testing tools to improve test creation, coverage, and efficiency
- Explore emerging approaches such as self-healing tests and AI-generated locators
- Integrate automated testing into CI/CD pipelines, including GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar
- Monitor automated test results and investigate failures, providing clear root-cause analysis
- Work alongside developers and product managers to understand new functionality and define acceptance criteria
- Support test planning and estimation for upcoming features and releases
- Document test strategies, coverage gaps, and known issues
- Contribute to continuous improvement across the wider quality engineering process
What They're Looking For
- 4+ years of experience in software test automation
- 3+ years of hands-on Playwright experience, ideally working with production test suites
- Strong TypeScript skills, including types, interfaces, async/await, and modular development
- Experience integrating automated tests into a CI/CD environment
- Experience with REST API testing, using tools such as Postman or Playwright API testing
- Practical experience using AI-assisted development or testing tools
- Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively across engineering and product teams
Nice to Have
- Experience with visual regression testing tools such as Applitools or Percy
- Knowledge of performance/load testing tools such as k6 or Lighthouse
- Experience with accessibility testing, including WCAG 2.1 and ARIA
- Familiarity with contract testing tools such as Pact
- Experience working within a regulated industry, particularly healthcare or fintech
- Contributions to open-source testing projects or examples of automation work
