Remote AI jobs: which roles are most remote-friendly, by the numbers

The remote share of every AI job title, measured from postings in the last 30 days, which roles have the most remote openings and how to read a remote posting.

Counts are roles posted in the last 30 days that were still open on September 17, 2026.

Remote AI jobs are a minority of AI jobs, and the size of that minority depends on which title you search. On September 17, 2026, AI Jobs Map listed 28,283 AI roles posted in the last 30 days, of which 3,456 were remote: a 12% share. This guide breaks that figure down by job title, shows which roles have the most remote openings and which have the highest remote share, and explains what the remote label does and does not tell you.

A role is counted as remote when the posting states that the work is remote. Hybrid roles are not counted, and neither are roles that merely mention remote work in passing. A remote role restricted to one country still counts as remote. That last point matters: this index does not yet split remote roles by the country you must live in, so the remote total mixes worldwide roles with ones open only to residents of the United States, the United Kingdom or India. The posting always says which, and every listing here links to it.

Which AI roles are most remote-friendly

The table lists every job family on the site with its total, its remote count and the remote share. Titles whose remote page has fewer than eight roles are omitted because the site does not publish pages that small.

By count, the largest remote pools on September 17, 2026 were AI Engineer (1,383), Data Scientist (894) and Machine Learning Engineer (739), which between them held 87% of all remote AI roles. They are the largest pools because they are the largest titles, not because they are unusually remote.

By share, the picture changes. The most remote-friendly titles were LLM Engineer (22%), AI Product Manager (20%) and AI Automation (19%). The least were Applied Scientist (3%), Deep Learning (6%) and Generative AI (8%). A share computed on a small title moves a lot when a handful of postings change, so the small titles near either end of the ranking should be read with that in mind.

The gap between the top and the bottom of that ranking is the useful fact. Roles that sit close to production systems and customers, such as applied science and forward deployed work, are advertised as remote less often. Roles that are mostly writing and reviewing code against an API are advertised as remote more often. If remote is a hard requirement for you, the title you search under changes your odds more than any other filter.

Remote AI engineer jobs

AI engineer roles building LLM-powered products, agents, retrieval systems and AI platform infrastructure. It is the largest AI title on the site, so it is also the largest remote pool: 1,383 remote roles out of 10,474 on September 17, 2026, a 13% share. The page for it is remote AI engineer jobs.

Two neighbouring titles are worth searching alongside it. Remote machine learning engineer jobs numbered 739 on the same day, and remote data scientist jobs numbered 894. The three titles overlap heavily in the work they describe, and an employer’s choice between them says more about its org chart than about the job.

Smaller titles with a high remote share are the other place to look. Remote AI automation jobs (240 on September 17, 2026) and remote LLM engineer jobs (57) are short pages, but a larger fraction of what is on them is remote, and fewer people search them.

Remote across countries

Many people searching for remote AI jobs want to work for a company in another country. The remote pages cannot answer that directly, for the reason above: the index does not record which countries a remote role is open to. What it does have is a page per city, which shows where employers that post AI roles are concentrated.

Outside the United States, the largest city pages on September 17, 2026 were London (1,361), Bengaluru (1,237), Singapore (993), Toronto (477) and Hyderabad (398). A company posting an on-site role in one of those cities is a company that hires AI engineers, and its remote postings, where it has any, tend to be open to the same region. The city ranking covers every city on the site.

Job pages carry a Visa sponsorship badge when the posting states that sponsorship is offered. It is shown only when the employer says so, which means its absence is not evidence of anything.

How to read a remote posting

  • Find the country of employment. It is usually in the location line, sometimes only in the body, and it decides whether the role is open to you at all.
  • Check for time zone requirements. “Remote, US hours” is a different job from “remote, async” for anyone outside the Americas.
  • Look for hybrid language. A posting that says remote in the title and “three days in the office” in the body is a hybrid role that was mislabelled at the source. It will still appear as remote here, because this site does not rewrite what employers publish.
  • Note the date. Remote roles attract more applications and close faster; the last three days is the page to check daily.

Every figure on this page is measured over roles posted in the last 30 days and still open on September 17, 2026. The remote pages are rebuilt daily, so their numbers will differ from these; the page is the newer figure.
