Key Responsibilities

• Responsible for the oversight of animal health and welfare;

• Oversight of clinical veterinary services, and researchers’ education and training;

• Breeding unit development and maintenance;

• Support for researchers with surgical procedures and techniques;

• Oversee compliance with regulatory and legal standards; and

• Serve as a member of the Animal Research Ethics Committee.

Minimum Requirements

• A Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours, NQF Level 8);

• South African Veterinary Council registration;

• At least 2 years of work-related experience as a veterinarian;

• Familiarity with an academic research environment;

• Experience working with a wide range of animal species;

• An ability to interact amicably with a range of persons, including academic, administrative and maintenance staff, members of the public, and animal rights

groups; and

• Basic computer skills.

Advantageous

• Master of Veterinary Sciences (NQF Level 9);

• Research laboratory animal work experience/exotic animal work experience;

• First-hand experience of the use of animals in teaching and research, preferably including the conducting of his or her own research;

• Appreciation of and experience in research using animal models;

• Experience of relevant regulatory matters;

• Experience with administrative and financial management;

• Clinical and surgical veterinary expertise, training and/or experience in laboratory animal handling, health and welfare, with a sound background in animal welfare

and ethics;

• Ability to work in a team and to delegate tasks;

• Attention to detail;

• An affinity for continuous improvement and development; and

• A propensity for being flexible, resilient, accountable, creative, and responsible to enable detailed planning and organisation during project management.
