About This Role
6 to 8 years of experience
Skills: Kotlin, NodeJS
About the work A large consumer-facing mobile product is being rebuilt as a native Android application from a clean slate, alongside a parallel native iOS build.
The role You lead the Android side of the program. You own the Android codebase, its architecture within the standards set by the Mobile Architect, and the delivery of the Android application. You are hands-on — this is a lead-by-building role with a small team, not a management position — and you are the technical voice for Android in program-level decisions.
What you will own
- The Android application architecture: layer boundaries, module structure, state management and navigation
- Technical direction and code review for the Android engineers; mentoring and raising the team's bar
- Android delivery: scope, sequencing, estimates, and the honest conversation when a date is at risk
- Build health — module structure, build times, dependency hygiene, R8 configuration, Baseline Profiles
- Play Console release process: staged rollouts, testing tracks, pre-launch reports, target API compliance
- Adaptive layouts across phones, tablets and foldables, which recent platform releases have made mandatory rather than optional
- Representing Android constraints and opportunities when platform-level decisions are made
Required
- 8+ years of native Android development, including at least one application you led architecturally from an early stage
- Kotlin 2.x with the K2 compiler; deep coroutines and Flow, including structured concurrency and testing asynchronous code
- Jetpack Compose in production at scale — not a pilot screen — with a real understanding of recomposition, stability and performance
- Navigation 3, or clear evidence you can move to it quickly from prior Compose navigation work
- Google's recommended app architecture: UI, domain and data layers, unidirectional data flow, ViewModel and StateFlow, repository pattern
- Hilt (or equivalent DI), Room, DataStore, Retrofit or Ktor with kotlinx.serialization
- Multi-module Gradle with Kotlin DSL, version catalogs and KSP; you can diagnose a slow or fragile build
- Current on Play Store requirements — target API level deadlines, the API 36 requirement now in force, and the API 37 changes coming
- Experience leading engineers: code review, mentoring, and setting standards that hold up when you are not in the room
- REST integration against Node.js backend services
Preferred
- Prior rewrite or replatform experience, particularly moving off a cross-platform framework
- Custom offline sync and conflict resolution
- Android security depth: Keystore, encrypted storage, BiometricPrompt, Play Integrity, certificate pinning
- Performance and reliability work: startup optimization, Macrobenchmark, ANR and crash rate reduction against a target
- Experience working to a shared API contract with a counterpart iOS team
