Role Overview

The L2 Network Support Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operations,

troubleshooting, and optimization of the data center's network infrastructure. This role

focuses on maintaining the high-speed switching fabric, edge routing, firewalls, and load

balancers that power the cloud region, while also managing local physical network

connectivity.

Key Responsibilities

L2 Network Operations & Troubleshooting (Core L2)

 Routing & Switching Support: Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Layer 2 and

Layer 3 environments (VLANs, Link Aggregation/vPC, OSPF, BGP, and VXLAN

fabrics).

 Data Center Fabric Management: Support spine-and-leaf network architectures

(such as Cisco Nexus/NX-OS or Arista EOS) integrated with Microsoft Azure physical

underlay networks.

 Security & Edge Support: Maintain and troubleshoot firewall rules, NAT

configurations, and VPN tunnels (IPsec/SSL) on enterprise platforms (e.g., Palo Alto,

Fortinet).

 Network Performance Monitoring: Leverage network management tools (SNMP,

Wireshark, NetFlow) to analyze traffic patterns, isolate latency issues, and resolve

packet loss.

 Change Management: Implement scheduled network changes, firmware upgrades,

and configuration rollbacks during approved maintenance windows.

Hands-on Essential Support

 Patching & Interconnects: Perform physical cross-connects between customer

cages, carrier Meet-Me-Rooms (MMRs), and Microsoft network distribution areas.

 Fiber Optic Testing: Use Optical Time-Domain Reflectometers (OTDRs) and light

source/power meters to test, clean, and validate fiber runs and optical transceivers

(SFP+, QSFP).

 Device Rack & Power: Physically mount routers, switches, console servers, and

firewalls; connect them to Intelligent Power Distribution Units (iPDUs).

 Inventory Control: Conduct routine auditing of network consumables (transceivers,

fiber patch cables, copper patch cords, and rack-mounting kits).

- Exposure to datacentres.

- Cabling and rack stacking

- Decommissioning and labelling

- Hardware troubleshooting

- Server knowledge and hands-on experience.

- Experience working with different types of hardware.

Required Skills & Qualifications

 Experience: 3–5 years of experience in network engineering, with a focus on data

center scale networks.

 Technical Certifications (Preferred): Cisco CCNP Enterprise / Data Center, Juniper

JNCIP-ENT, or equivalent.

 Technical Competency: Strong understanding of the TCP/IP suite, DNS, DHCP,

and structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA-568).

 Local Compliance: Clean background record to meet strict physical security access

protocols for UAE-based hyperscale facilities.

Common Competencies for Both Roles (Microsoft DC UAE)

Because these engineers will represent your services within a critical Microsoft site, both

profiles should share the following standard expectations:

 SLA/KPI Discipline: Absolute commitment to meeting strict Key Performance

Indicators (KPIs) and Mean Time to Resolve (MTTR) metrics.

 Shift Work Readiness: Ability to support 24x7x365 rotational shift schedules,

including weekends and public holidays.

 Communication: High proficiency in English (both written and verbal) to document

incidents clearly in ticketing systems (like ServiceNow or internal Microsoft systems)

and coordinate with remote L3 engineering teams.

 Health & Safety: Compliance with Data Center Environment Health & Safety (EHS)

guidelines, including safe lifting practices (up to 20-25 kg) and electrical safety

procedures.
