Key Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Review
- Prepare and review federal and state income tax returns for Individuals, S corporations, Partnerships, C corporations, and Trusts and estates
- Review tax returns prepared by other team members for accuracy, completeness, and technical compliance
- Research and resolve complex tax issues
- Ensure returns are completed accurately and on schedule during tax season
- Assist clients with estimated tax payments, extensions, notices, and other tax compliance matters
- Identify tax planning opportunities during the preparation and review process
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as a primary point of contact for a portfolio of long-standing individual and business clients
- Develop a strong understanding of clients' businesses, financial situations, and tax needs
- Communicate tax results and recommendations clearly to clients
- Respond promptly and professionally to client questions throughout the year
- Build trusted, long-term client relationships and help maintain high client retention
- Participate in client transition meetings with existing firm leadership
Year-Round Tax Planning & Advisory
- Review prior-year tax returns and current-year financial information to identify tax planning opportunities
- Prepare tax projections and estimated tax calculations
- Advise small-business owners on entity structure, compensation, retirement planning, deductions, and other common tax matters
- Conduct year-end planning discussions with clients
- Stay current on federal and New York tax law developments and communicate relevant changes to clients
Accounting & Small-Business Support
- Review client financial statements, bookkeeping, and general ledger activity when necessary to support tax preparation
- Work with QuickBooks and other accounting records to identify and resolve discrepancies
- Assist clients with payroll, sales tax, bookkeeping, and general small-business accounting questions
- Coordinate with internal bookkeeping and accounting staff to ensure accurate financial information is available for tax preparation
Team Leadership & Practice Management
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior accountants and tax preparers
- Review staff work and provide constructive feedback
- Help manage tax-season workflow, client deadlines, and workload prioritization
- Assist with maintaining consistent documentation and quality-control standards
- Work closely with ownership to improve processes, technology, and client service
- Help support the ongoing transition and modernization of an established accounting practice
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
- Active CPA license strongly preferred
- EA candidates with significant public accounting experience may also be considered
- 7-10+ years of public accounting and tax experience
- Significant experience preparing and reviewing individual and business tax returns
- Strong knowledge of federal and New York State taxation
- Experience working with small businesses, closely held companies, and individual taxpayers
- Prior experience managing or reviewing the work of other tax professionals strongly preferred
- Excellent client-service and communication skills
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple deadlines during busy season
- Comfortable independently handling client questions and technical tax matters
- Proficiency with tax preparation and accounting software; experience with Drake Tax and QuickBooks is particularly helpful
- Comfortable using Microsoft 365 and modern document-management technology
- Reliable, organized, professional, and able to take ownership of responsibilities
Pay: $75,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
