Teaching Assistant in the Early Modern Studies Program (Part-time)

The Early Modern Studies Program at the University of King’s College invites applications for a Teaching Assistant position for “Representations of the Self in Early Modern Art, Literature, and Thought” (EMSP 2001) in the fall 2026 term. This course explores the development and representations of the modern self in its European cultural expressions, primarily focusing on art, philosophy and literary texts from the Enlightenment to early developments in Romanticism. We will examine the artist’s role as political actor in the French Revolution, the Romantic reaction to the Enlightenment’s emphasis on reason as evidenced in the rise of sensibility in literature and art, and the championing of emotion as a more authentic expression of the self. We will also examine the impact of biographical analysis on the appreciation of women’s art, the development of ethnic and racial taxonomies in visual culture, and the role of self-representation in Western and non-Western cultures.
Duties Include But Are Not Limited To:
- reading course material
- grading assignments and exams
- holding office hours and assisting students with assignments
- attending lectures (please consult the Dalhousie Academic Timetable regarding class time)
- moderating discussions and/or tutorials
- consulting on a regular basis with the instructor regarding the approach taken in teaching, grading and other expectations
Qualifications And Experience
Candidates may come from various fields but should have at least an undergraduate degree. Graduates with some background in art history, early modern studies, literature, philosophy, or cultural studies are especially encouraged to apply. Prior TA experience is also an asset.
Hourly Rate of Pay: $30.05 (classification of TA90). The position is conditional on the course’s final enrolment numbers.
