Summary
The Advanced Clinical Pharmacist Specialist (ACPS) position is a member of the inpatient Acute Care Clinical Pharmacy Team and focus on Inpatient Medical Oncology and Internal/Hospital Medicine (IHM) within an NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
This position provides comprehensive direct patient care as a part of interdisciplinary Medical Oncology/IHM teams managing medically complex oncology patients, including those receiving inpatient chemotherapy, experiencing complications of malignancy, or presenting with acute and chronic comorbid conditions. This ACPS services as a medication expert for the management of patients with immune checkpoint inhibitor toxicities (ITOX), infectious complications, thromboembolic disorders, renal and hepatic dysfunction, endocrine and metabolic abnormalities, and other complex medical conditions impacting oncology care. Transitions of care to the outpatient oncology setting is another important aspect of this position’s responsibility.
Additional responsibilities will include participation in Department (Pharmacy and IHM) Institutional Committees, including the multidisciplinary ITOX Committee. Core preceptorship in the PGY1 Pharmacy Residency and PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency is required for this position.
The ACPS will have extensive clinical experience in inpatient medical oncology and internal medicine along with a strong background in pharmacy practice including medication safety, formulary and therapeutic guideline management, standard operating procedure and policy development, precepting pharmacy learners, and participation in clinical research or quality improvement initiatives.
This position offers a desirable 7-on/7-off daytime schedule while maintaining a highly specialized clinical practice role with direct participation in inpatient medical oncology and hospital medicine teams.
Minimum Required Credentials
- Bachelor's degree in pharmacy
- Licensed Pharmacist (RPh/ PS)
- Board of Pharmacy Certification (BPS) in area of Specialty within 18 months of hire or transfer. BPS certifications allowed are: BCPS - Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialty, BCOP - Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist
- Completion of a PGY-2 Pharmacy Residency in area of specialization OR PGY-1 residency AND a minimum of three (3) years of progressive experience as a clinical pharmacist in a comprehensive academic setting OR 8 years of progressive experience as a clinical pharmacist in a comprehensive academic setting with significant time practicing in specialty area

- Demonstrated ability to lead clinical initiatives
- Experience mentoring residents, students, or junior pharmacists
- Participation in institutional committees or task forces
- Evidence of autonomous practice capabilities
- Active participation in research or quality improvement

The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Pharm D
- Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Has Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) certification in area of specialty practice. Board Certification in Oncology Pharmacy (BCOP) is preferred.
- Relevant work experience as a clinical pharmacy specialist in medical oncology on an interdisciplinary rounding team. Advanced knowledge of oncology pharmacotherapy, supportive care, immunotherapy-related toxicities, and internal medicine disease state management. Demonstrated experience in precepting pharmacy students and residents.
Responsibilities
- As a part of an interdisciplinary Internal/Hospital Medicine rounding service, provide comprehensive clinical pharmacy services to assigned service’s hospitalized patients with medical oncology and internal medicine needs, including inpatient chemotherapy, ITOX, pharmacotherapy consultations, renal/hepatic dose adjustments, anticoagulation management, and transitions of care. Average daily census of ~15 – 20 patients.
- Collaborate with physicians (e.g. Internal Medicine, Medical Oncologist, Infectious Diseases, Supportive Care Medicine), advanced practice providers, nurses, case managers, and other pharmacists to ensure safe, effective, and evidence-based medication use through recommendation, implementation, monitoring, and modification of individualized pharmacotherapeutic treatment plans.
- Develops, interprets, and provides medication related information and education for pharmacists, providers, nurses, and other healthcare personnel. Coordinates and provide medication therapy education and counseling to patients and caregivers.
- Support formulary initiatives, medication use evaluations, and implementation of clinical protocols or order sets related to internal medicine care in oncology patients.
- APPE Pharmacy Students, PGY1 Pharmacy Residents, and PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residents as part of our ASHP-accredited Residency Program.
- Participate in interdisciplinary clinical committees focused on quality, safety, and guideline development.

Salary Range
$145,308.80 - $221,603.20
Salary ranges posted for this position represent the expected base pay range for the role. Actual compensation may vary based on location and a variety of job-related factors, including experience, skills, education, and internal equity among Team Members in similar positions.
