About This Position
The City of Phoenix Water Services Department, one of the nation's largest potable water utilities, treats and delivers safe, reliable drinking water to 1.5 million customers across approximately 540 square miles. Phoenix Water Services also manages the sewer collection system and treats wastewater for 2.5 million residents in metropolitan Phoenix.
Water Services is seeking a Machinist to fabricate and repair complex metal components for water and wastewater treatment equipment. The role includes operating standard machining tools such as lathes, milling machines, drill presses, shapers, and planers to produce precise parts according to detailed specifications. The Machinist will also cut and repair specialized threads, including ACME and standard machine threads, while maintaining strict tolerances and completing work under tight deadlines.
This position plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and performance of essential operational equipment across Water Services facilities by ensuring all machined components meet high-quality standards.
Position Location: 91st Ave. Wastewater Treatment Plant (5615 S 91st Ave, Tolleson, AZ 85353).
IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Basic computer skills.
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the machinist's trade.
- Ability to work safety and cooperatively with others.
SALARY
Pay Range: $29.44 to $43.49 per hour.
Hiring Range: $29.44 to $37.58 per hour.

- Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
- Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
- Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
- Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
- Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
- When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

Minimum Qualifications
- One year of experience as a skilled machinist AND completion of a recognized machinist apprenticeship program.
- OR three years of experience as a skilled machinist.
- Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
- Working conditions require:
- Remaining in a standing position for extended periods of time.
- Making fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism (Examples: operating dials or pedals).
- Making skillful, controlled manipulations of small objects (examples: working with very small drills and micrometers).
- Coordinating the movement of more than one limb simultaneously (example: operating the milling table vertically and horizontally).
- Bending or stooping repeatedly or continually over time.
- Lifting objects up to 50 pounds may be required.

- These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Preferred Qualifications
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
- Experience as an Industrial Maintenance Machinist/Pump Machinist, including experience in/with.
- Fabricating complex metal objects utilizing standard machining equipment.
- Machining of complex threads such as ACME, as well as standard machine threads.
- CNC (Computer Numerical Control) software.
- Related college coursework and/or trade school experience.
- Related certifications, including, but not limited to: Lathe Operations, CAM Turning Programmer, Milling, Grinding, CNC Mill Programming Setup and Operations, Precision Sheet Metal Operator, Manufacturing Technician, Manufacturing Technology, Metalworking Fluids Specialist, NIMS Machinist Level 1 & 2.
