Role Summary
The Senior Quantitative Scientist will provide scientifically defensible quantitative analysis supporting our Clients international Affairs programs, with a focus on wildlife population biology, conservation science, ecological statistics, and sustainable wildlife management.
The ideal candidate will have strong population-modeling and statistical expertise, advanced R skills, and the ability to clearly communicate scientific methods, assumptions, and uncertainty to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop quantitative approaches supporting CITES non-detriment findings and sustainable wildlife management.
- Develop and validate sustainable-offtake, population-status, harvest, and population models.
- Analyze uncertainty, data sufficiency, model assumptions, and limitations.
- Apply quantitative methods including:
- Matrix population models
- Logistic/theta-logistic models
- Potential Biological Removal (PBR)
- Life-history and growth modeling
- Mark-recapture
- Occupancy and N-mixture models
- Distance sampling
- Population trend analysis
- Conduct statistically defensible wildlife-trade and population analyses.
- Develop reproducible analytical implementations using R and, preferably, Python.
- Validate models against published research, known cases, and established scientific results.
- Clearly communicate methodologies, assumptions, limitations, and uncertainty to scientific and nontechnical audiences.
- Collaborate directly with USFWS Division of Scientific Authority subject-matter experts.
- Support AI-assisted scientific decision-support tools while maintaining appropriate human scientific oversight.
Required Qualifications
- PhD strongly preferred in Quantitative Ecology, Wildlife Biology, Population Ecology, Biostatistics, Conservation Biology, or a related field.
- Strong Master's-level candidates with exceptional relevant experience will be considered.
- 8–12+ years of relevant quantitative, ecological, or scientific experience preferred.
- Advanced R programming and statistical analysis experience.
- Python experience is desirable.
- Demonstrated expertise in population modeling, ecological statistics, and uncertainty analysis.
- Experience conducting and/or publishing peer-reviewed scientific research.
- Strong ability to explain and defend quantitative methodologies and conclusions to scientific subject-matter experts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CITES, ESA, endangered species, wildlife trade, or regulatory science.
- Experience supporting wildlife conservation, population assessment, or sustainable harvest decisions.
- Familiarity with USFWS programs and scientific review processes.
- Experience developing reproducible scientific models and decision-support tools.
- Experience working with multidisciplinary scientific and regulatory teams.
