About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Staff Data Engineer specializing in Market Data to join our Institutional Markets team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for architecting, developing, and maintaining the core systems that generate, normalize, and distribute real-time market data across Coinbase. Your work will serve as the backbone of our trading platform, enabling institutional clients to execute trades swiftly and reliably. This position offers a unique opportunity to build market data infrastructure from the ground up, combining the agility of a startup environment with the reach and stability of Coinbase. You will lead a lean, high-impact team and collaborate closely with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver low-latency, high-throughput solutions that meet the demanding needs of institutional trading.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in backend engineering, with a focus on low-latency, high-performance systems
- Hands-on experience with market data systems including feed handlers, normalization, and distribution
- Proficiency in low-latency programming languages such as Java or C++
- Experience with high-throughput messaging frameworks like Aeron, SBE, or similar technologies
- Knowledge of venue/exchange connectivity and market data protocols including FIX, ITCH/OUCH, and multicast
- Proven track record of delivering end-to-end features and operating production systems
- Strong understanding of observability, incident response, and system reliability best practices
- Ability to write clean, well-tested, high-quality code and raise engineering standards within a lean team
- Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams including product managers and engineers
- Utilization of generative AI responsibly to improve workflows and deliver business value
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate components of the market data infrastructure, including feed handlers, normalization processes, and data distribution systems
- Develop low-latency, high-throughput systems to support real-time market data feeds used by trading applications
- Ensure system reliability and performance by enhancing observability, participating in on-call rotations, and responding to incidents promptly
- Write high-quality, well-tested code to maintain and improve the robustness of market data systems
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and other stakeholders to define and deliver new market data capabilities
- Lead efforts to optimize system performance, reduce latency, and improve data accuracy and integrity
- Contribute to documentation and best practices to ensure maintainability and scalability of infrastructure
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and adopt new technologies to enhance system capabilities
