About the job
This role is being recruited by CoffeeSpace on behalf of an anonymous startup focused on developing autonomous robotic systems for data centers.
We’re identifying a small number of exceptional mechanical design engineers from our network. If there’s a strong fit, we’ll introduce you directly to the founding team.
Location: San Francisco, California, United States
Compensation: $150K - $250K base + competitive equity
Employment type: Full-time
Visa: Visa sponsorship not available
About the company
This company builds autonomous robots designed to automate complex tasks in data centers, such as GPU repairs and precision cabling, reducing the need for manual labor. Founded in 2023, the team is currently around 10 people and has secured $12.4M in funding. Their robots are already being deployed in environments managed by major hyperscalers like Meta, Google, Oracle, and Microsoft.
About the role
As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take ownership of mechanical subsystems from the initial concept through to working prototypes. You will be part of a close-knit hardware team where design, fabrication, and execution are all conducted in-house, allowing for rapid iteration and development.
What You’ll Do
- Design mechanical subsystems from first sketch through prototype, focusing on materials, tolerances, and manufacturing methods.
- Utilize CAD tools and FEA for design, optimized for rapid prototyping methods such as 3D printing and CNC machining.
- Build prototypes using 3D printers, shop tools, and CNC equipment.
- Integrate mechanical designs with motors, sensors, electronics, and actuators on robotic arms and mobile bases.
- Collaborate with electrical, software, and robotics teams to bring complete autonomous systems to production.
Why This Role Is Compelling
- Work on cutting-edge robotic systems that are transforming data center operations.
- Be part of a small, agile team where your contributions have a direct impact.
- Engage in hands-on work that moves quickly from concept to production.
- Collaborate with leading tech companies to deploy real-world solutions.
The Ideal Candidate
- 2-5 years of experience in mechanical design engineering.
- Proficient in CAD (SolidWorks/Fusion 360/Onshape) and FEA.
- Experienced in rapid prototyping, including 3D printing and CNC machining.
- Strong portfolio of systems taken from concept to physical prototype.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
This Role Is NOT For You If
- You prefer a purely theoretical or desk-based role with no hands-on work.
- You require visa sponsorship to work in the United States.
- You are not able to work on-site in San Francisco.
