Location: Dublin - Hybrid

Division: Software Engineering / Financial Technology

Contract: Permanent, Full-time

Hours: Full-time, Monday–Friday

Start Date: ASAP

About the Role

Intellect Talent is supporting a client that is a leading global payments technology company, delivering industry-leading software that empowers business users around the world to make data-driven decisions through advanced analytics and experimentation.

We are looking for a technically strong Senior Software Engineer to join a small, agile, and empowered engineering team working on scalable, cloud-native solutions within the payments and financial technology environment.

This is an opportunity to work across the full software development lifecycle, from ideation and architecture through to implementation, testing, deployment, and production support.

You will help define and evolve system architecture while contributing to complex technical solutions across distributed systems, microservices, APIs, data platforms, analytics, and cloud-native applications.

Role Overview

The purpose of this role is to design, develop, and deliver scalable, high-performance, and reliable software solutions within a complex financial technology environment.

You will contribute to system architecture, technical design, software development, data engineering, performance optimisation, testing, and production support.

You will be expected to take ownership across the full engineering lifecycle, working closely with lead engineers, architects, product stakeholders, and cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into secure, maintainable, and scalable technical solutions.

The role offers significant technical ownership, with engineers empowered to make pragmatic decisions around processes, architecture, and implementation while maintaining strong engineering standards.

Responsibilities

- Lead team-level system design, including high-level and detailed design, API contracts, data flows, service interactions, integration patterns, and non-functional requirements.

- Define and evolve requirements around scalability, reliability, performance, security, and operability.

- Partner with lead engineers and architects to align team-level implementations with broader platform architecture and modernisation objectives.

- Develop and optimise data-intensive applications and analytics capabilities using Databricks, Spark, and related technologies.

- Build and maintain scalable data pipelines capable of processing and delivering data reliably at enterprise scale.

- Design, code, test, debug, and deliver production-quality software across the full engineering lifecycle.

- Design and develop distributed systems, microservices, RESTful APIs, and cloud-native applications.

- Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks across services, APIs, data processing workloads, and user experiences.

- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate product and business requirements into scalable technical solutions.

- Evaluate technical approaches and make informed architectural and implementation trade-offs.

- Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through technical guidance, pairing, code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing.

- Contribute to a collaborative engineering culture based on ownership, clear communication, continuous learning, pragmatic decision-making, and high standards of software quality.

- Improve engineering quality through code reviews, design reviews, automated testing, secure coding practices, observability, performance tuning, CI/CD, and production-readiness practices.

- Troubleshoot complex issues across application, service, API, data, and cloud layers.

- Lead root-cause analysis and implement durable solutions that improve platform reliability, performance, and supportability.

- Contribute to technical documentation, engineering standards, reusable patterns, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.

- Work closely with architects and engineering leadership to support long-term platform maintainability and technical evolution.

- Maintain awareness of emerging software engineering, cloud, data, and platform technologies and identify opportunities for improvement.

- Undertake additional duties as required to support the engineering function.

Knowledge & Experience Required

- Proven experience designing and developing scalable, high-performance, and reliable software.

- Strong understanding of distributed systems, microservices, cloud-native architecture, APIs, and modern software engineering practices.

- Experience working across the full software development lifecycle within an agile engineering environment.

- Strong programming experience across modern engineering technologies and frameworks.

- Experience working with data-intensive applications, analytics platforms, and large-scale data processing.

- Demonstrated ability to contribute to technical architecture and lead team-level design discussions.

- Proven ability to evaluate technical trade-offs and influence implementation decisions.

- Ability to translate product and business requirements into scalable, secure, and maintainable technical solutions.

- Strong collaboration, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

- Comfortable working through ambiguity, making sound technical decisions, and driving results through hands-on execution.

- Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to engineering standards and best practices.

Mandatory

- 6+ years of software engineering experience delivering scalable, high-performance, and reliable software in an agile environment.

- Strong hands-on experience designing and building distributed systems, microservices, RESTful APIs, and cloud-native applications.

- Strong programming experience with Java and Spring Boot.

- Experience with modern frontend and/or full-stack technologies such as TypeScript and React.

- Strong experience with SQL and relational or analytical data technologies.

- Proven ability to lead team-level technical design discussions and evaluate architectural and technical trade-offs.

- Ability to translate business and product requirements into secure, scalable, and maintainable solutions.

- Strong understanding of software quality, testing, security, performance, reliability, observability, and production readiness.

- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering and cross-functional teams.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.

Desirable

- Experience with Databricks, Spark, or PySpark, particularly in relation to data pipelines and analytics-driven applications.

- Experience building and supporting cloud-native applications on AWS and/or Azure.

- Experience with CI/CD, Docker, Kubernetes, and containerised environments.

- Experience with observability, monitoring, logging, and production support practices.

- Experience with automated testing and performance engineering.

- Experience working within payments, banking, financial services, insurance, or other highly regulated environments.

- Experience working with large-scale analytics, experimentation, or data-driven decision platforms.

- Experience contributing to cloud modernisation or platform transformation initiatives.

- Relevant professional certifications in cloud, software engineering, data, or related technologies.
