About The Team
The product team builds Paperbase, the interface humans and agents share. We are a small team obsessed with the difference between it works and it feels right. This is the first design hire - you shape the visual language of a new category from scratch, working directly with the CTO.
What you'll do
As Founding Product Designer, you own the interface of Paperbase end to end: information architecture, interaction, visual design, and the emotional experience of the product. You design for humans and AI agents in one shared workspace - provenance, trust, and multiplayer handoffs - and you build the design system that keeps Paperbase coherent across every deployment.
Responsibilities
- Own the product and interaction design of Paperbase across web and desktop
- Design for human-AI collaboration: shared context, provenance, trust signals, and multiplayer handoffs
- Build and maintain the design system that keeps Paperbase feeling like one product across every deployment
- Partner closely with the CTO on architecture-level design decisions - you understand the cost of your choices
- Ship fast: designs move from concept to implementation in days, not quarters
- Set the visual language of a new category
Minimum Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of product design experience with a strong portfolio of shipped work
- Real interaction depth - information architecture, flows, states, and feedback loops - not just visual polish
- Systems thinking: you reason about the product beneath the pixels
- Proficiency in standard design tools (Figma or equivalent)
- Strong communication - you can articulate design decisions clearly
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience designing AI products, developer tools, or enterprise software
- Experience building design systems
- Experience designing collaboration or multi-user products
- Frontend understanding (HTML/CSS or prototyping) so designs translate to implementation
- Startup or high-growth environment experience
