ABOUT DOVETAIL
Dovetail is building a new operating model for electrical contracting.
We are creating the infrastructure that allows experienced electrical professionals to run jobs and build businesses with better estimating, staffing, purchasing, payments, administration and technology behind them.
We are looking for the first electrical operations leader to help build it.
This is not a corporate VP role.
In the beginning, you will personally review estimates, challenge bids, work with Master Electricians, help assemble crews, talk with customers, solve problems on live projects and help determine how the business should operate.
Over time, the systems you help build will become software, processes and teams that can scale across markets.
For the right person, this role can grow into leadership of Dovetail's electrical business nationally.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Review electrical scopes, estimates and bids
- Validate labor hours, material quantities, project schedules and pricing
- Identify estimating mistakes before they become job problems
- Work directly with Master Electricians, foremen and field crews
- Help determine appropriate project margins and pricing
- Oversee execution of early projects
- Analyze why jobs beat or miss estimates
- Help recruit high-quality electricians and electrical contractors into the network
- Develop relationships with GCs, developers, owners and other buyers of electrical work
- Build relationships with electrical distributors and suppliers
- Create practical operating standards for estimating, staffing, scheduling, quality and project execution
- Help translate real electrical-construction experience into technology that can automate much of this work
WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
The ideal candidate may currently be an Electrical Project Manager, Service Manager, Operations Manager, Estimator/PM, Special Projects Manager, Superintendent, Master Electrician or owner/operator who is ready for substantially more responsibility.
You have already learned how electrical contracting actually works.
Now you want the opportunity to help build it differently.
You should have direct experience with several of the following:
- Estimating and bidding electrical projects
- Managing electrical projects from estimate through completion
- Managing multiple crews, foremen or simultaneous projects
- Job costing and project profitability
- Labor productivity and manpower planning
- Change orders and scope management
- Material procurement
- Scheduling
- Budgeting and forecasting
- Customer and GC relationships
- Recruiting or managing electricians
- Service, residential, special projects, commercial or light-industrial electrical work
You should be able to look at an electrical estimate and recognize when something does not make sense.
You should also be comfortable calling a foreman in the morning, reviewing an estimate in the afternoon and helping redesign the process that evening.
We are looking for someone who likes solving problems, moves quickly and does not need a large organization around them to get things done.
We are especially interested in people who have built something themselves - a team, department, service operation, process, customer base or business - rather than only operating within an established system.
BACKGROUND
Experience inside a strong electrical contracting organization is preferred, but we are equally interested in exceptional operators from smaller service, residential or commercial electrical businesses who have had broad responsibility.
An engineering, construction management or similar technical degree is a plus, but exceptional operating experience matters more.
Experience with electrical estimating platforms such as Accubid, McCormick, ConEst or similar systems is highly valuable.
A Master Electrician or Journeyman license is highly valuable.
Texas electrical-construction relationships are also highly valuable.
COMPENSATION
Base salary: $150,000-$185,000
Exceptional candidates may be considered above this range.
The role will also include meaningful equity ownership.
We are willing to be aggressive on both responsibility and equity for someone who has the ability and ambition to help build a large electrical organization.
This is an opportunity to have significantly more influence and ownership than you would typically receive inside an established contractor.
