Position Summary:

The Director, Communications and Marketing sets and leads the strategic communications, marketing, and public relations agenda for Employ Prince George’s in support of our mission to connect job seekers, employers, and community partners to economic opportunity. This leader owns the organization's brand, external voice, and reputation, translating program outcomes, participant stories, and workforce data into compelling communications that build public awareness, deepen funder and employer confidence, and drive enrollment across our training and workforce programs. This position will play a key role in building and shaping the department to effectively support the organization's continued growth and scaling.

Reporting to the Director, Executive Operations and Board Liaison and serving as a member of the senior leadership team, the role builds and leads the communications function, manages staff and vendor relationships, owns the communications budget, and serves as the organization's primary spokesperson alongside the CEO.

Roles and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

- Develop and lead the organization's annual and multi-year communications and marketing strategy, aligning messaging with strategic priorities, grant deliverables, and enrollment and placement targets.

- Serve as a strategic advisor to the executive leadership on public positioning, message framing, and reputational risk.

- Own the organization's brand strategy and ensure consistency across all internal and external materials, including alignment with funder and workforce board visual identity requirements where applicable.

- Set annual goals and KPIs for the communications function and report progress.

Content & Storytelling

- Oversee the development of press releases, newsletters, annual reports, grant-related success stories, talking points, and web/social content that highlight participant and employer outcomes.

- Guide staff in interviewing program participants, alumni, and employer partners to build a pipeline of human-interest stories for use in fundraising, advocacy, and public relations.

- Oversee photography and video production for campaigns, funder reports, and flagship events

Digital & Brand Strategy

- Oversee the organization's website, social media presence, and email marketing strategy, ensuring content is accurate, timely, and mission aligned.

- Use digital engagement and audience data to guide strategy, allocate resources, and improve reach among job seekers, employers, and funders.

- Direct recruitment marketing strategy for training cohorts and hiring events in partnership with Program and Employer Engagement leadership.

Media & External Relations

- Serve as primary media contact and organizational spokesperson; build and maintain relationships with local and trade media, elected officials, and community stakeholders.

- Lead crisis communications and manage the organization's public response to sensitive issues in partnership with the leadership.

- Partner with internal stakeholders on messaging for grant proposals, donor communications, annual reports, and funder site visits.

- Represent the organization at public events, workforce board meetings, employer forums, and with elected officials as needed.

Team Leadership & Budget Management

- Build, lead, and mentor a communications team, including staff, interns, and/or contractors (designers, photographers, videographers, freelance writers).

- Own and manage the annual communications budget, including vendor contracts, print and digital production costs, and paid media.

- Establish workflows, editorial standards, and a shared content calendar to coordinate communications support across departments.

Education and Experience Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in communications, marketing, or public relations, including at least 3 years in a leadership role, ideally within a nonprofit, workforce development, education, or public-sector setting

- Demonstrated success developing and executing organization-wide communications strategy, with strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills across formats.

- Experience serving as a media spokesperson and managing press relationships.

- Track record of managing budgets, vendors, and staff or direct reports.

- Proficiency with digital marketing platforms (e.g., Constant Contact, Mailchimp, Google Analytics), social media management, and design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite).

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience working with workforce development boards, community colleges, employer partners, or job training programs.

- Familiarity with grant reporting requirements from public funders (e.g., WIOA, state workforce agencies, foundations).

- Experience serving on a senior leadership team and reporting to a Board of Directors.

- Bilingual or multilingual skills relevant to the communities served.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

- Proven ability to design and execute long term communications and marketing strategies.

- Ability to ensure consistent voice and brand alignment across communication channels.

- Familiarity with press outreach, spokesperson preparation, and relationship building with media outlets.

- Demonstrated excellence in leadership, interpersonal communication, and strategic planning.

- Ability to build and maintain effective partnerships with stakeholders, community organizations, education providers, and employers to advance workforce initiatives.

- Highly organized and proficient in Microsoft Office, CRM platforms, and AI tools.
