About DCMS
The Dallas County Medical Society (DCMS) is the professional association representing physicians, residents, and medical students in Dallas County, Texas. Founded in 1876, DCMS has grown from 30 members to roughly 9,500 and is the second-largest county medical society in the country. DCMS is a component of the Texas Medical Association.
Our mission is to promote public health and advocate for physicians and their relationships with patients, while upholding professionalism in the practice of medicine. We live that mission through physician volunteers who serve on our committees and boards in partnership with a professional full-time staff. Our headquarters office is located in the Dallas Uptown District.
About the opportunity
DCMS is hiring a Director of Events. This is the person who owns the Society’s event calendar from the first idea and the first budget line to the last thank-you note.
You will plan, execute, and evaluate the in-person and virtual events DCMS offers as a benefit of membership: the annual gala and installation dinner, the Women in Medicine Leadership Conference, the medical student mixer, family events at the Dallas Zoo and the Dallas Arboretum, monthly Board dinners, and partner-hosted events we promote to our members. These events are among the most visible expressions of the DCMS brand, and this role is accountable for how they land.
You will also work hand in hand with business development on event sponsorship — helping shape and price the packages, helping sell them, and making sure every commitment lands beautifully on site. Business development carries the broader non-dues revenue portfolio; you own the event side of it with them.
DCMS is a small, collaborative staff. This position works closely with communications, membership, business development, and finance, and reports to the Chief Executive Officer.
What you will do
- Own the annual DCMS event calendar and lead the planning cycle for every event on it.
- Build and manage event budgets in collaboration with the CFO and CEO, and deliver each event on budget.
- Source and negotiate venues and vendor contracts, conduct site visits, and manage all logistics: catering, audio/visual, entertainment, security, décor, and materials.
- Establish and manage ticket sales, registration, and pricing in our online platform (OneCause), and report on attendance.
- Manage on-site production and be the person who solves the problem at 6:40 p.m. when the linens are wrong.
- Work with business development to build, sell, and fulfill event sponsorship packages, and to cultivate sponsor prospects that come to you through event work.
- Feed timely event and registration information to communications for the newsletter, member email, website, and social media.
- Staff the Women in Medicine Committee and provide event updates to the DCMS Board of Directors.
- Produce post-event reports on attendance, financials, and what we should do differently next time.
What you bring
- A bachelor’s degree in business, hospitality, communications, or a related field.
- Significant event planning experience with demonstrated ownership of multi-element events from concept through execution. Association, non-profit, or membership-organization experience is a plus, as is a CMP or comparable credential.
- Real comfort with event budgets, vendor contracts, and reconciling revenue against expense.
- Meticulous organization, and the judgment to make fast, sound decisions in the middle of a live event.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, and the presence to represent DCMS to physician leaders, members, sponsors, and vendors.
- Fluency with event and ticketing platforms and standard office systems, plus practical experience putting AI tools to work day to day, including the Microsoft 365 stack (Copilot) and Claude.
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends around events, and to travel regularly to local event venues.
