Schneider Electric has a hybrid opportunity for an Associate controller to be based in one of the following Schneider Electric Hub locations: Foxboro, MA or Boston, MA.
Are you an accounting expert who thrives at the intersection of technical excellence, business partnership, and financial governance? In this role, you will own the accounting, reporting, and internal control environment for key balance sheet and income statement areas within a significant legal entity. Representing the Chief Accounting Officer organization, you will provide authoritative accounting guidance, translate business activity into compliant financial statements, and influence critical financial decisions through expert technical judgment and cross-functional collaboration.
What You'll Do
Month-end close & financial reporting
- Prepare, review and approve the recurring and non-recurring journal entries for the assigned portfolio within the entity close calendar, ensuring each is supported, correctly classified and posted to the right period.
- Compile entries exceeding delegated approval thresholds for review by the Chief Accounting Officer organization, with a clear written rationale for each, in line with the local Chart of Approval.
- Prepare balance sheet and income statement variance commentary for the assigned areas, explaining the underlying drivers rather than restating movements, and present the results in entity and territory balance sheet reviews.
- Validate consistency between the sub-ledgers, the general ledger and Group consolidation reporting, and resolve ledger corrections and reporting differences affecting the portfolio.
- Support hard close, half-year and year-end reporting cycles, including Group reporting packages, statutory reporting requirements and disclosure inputs.
Technical accounting and judgement
- Determine the appropriate accounting treatment for transactions and balances within the portfolio under IFRS and Group accounting policy, including the measurement of estimates, reserves and provisions.
- Research, conclude and document technical accounting positions in memoranda of a standard suitable for review by Group Accounting and the external auditors.
- Review the outputs of systematic calculations and models supporting accounting estimates, challenge material period-on-period movements at the level of the underlying driver, and ensure unsupported manual adjustments are eliminated at source.
- Maintain and periodically reassess the methodologies and assumptions underpinning recurring estimates, and explain them credibly to finance and non-finance stakeholders.
- Escalate emerging technical issues, accounting risks and potential misstatements early, with a recommended position rather than an open question.
Business partnering
- Act as the single accounting point of contact for the operational and functional finance teams whose activity drives the assigned portfolio, and lead the recurring review forums covering those areas.
- Ensure that accounting entries within the portfolio are prepared, reviewed and posted through the accounting team in line with Group standards, preventing decentralized or duplicated postings.
- Translate operational activity into its accounting consequences for business stakeholders, and translate accounting requirements into practical actions those stakeholders can execute.
- Coordinate recurring operational accounting procedures with the business, including period cut-off routines and verification activity, and consolidate the results for financial reporting purposes.
- Hold a firm technical position where required while sustaining a constructive working relationship with the business.
Internal control, reconciliations and audit
- Own the account reconciliations for the assigned portfolio as preparer, reviewer or approver as applicable — correct ownership assignment, aging classification, supporting documentation and remediation plans — in compliance with Group account reconciliation policy.
- Investigate and clear legacy unsupported balances, and establish sustainable reconciliation processes with the business and the shared-service centers.
- Operate, document and evidence the key internal controls assigned to the role, and maintain the control environment as processes and systems change.
- Serve as the primary respondent for external and internal audit requests covering the assigned portfolio, and manage open items and agreed actions to on-time closure.
- Identify control gaps and informal controls, and formalize them into documented, evidenced and repeatable procedures.
Process improvement and transformation
- Reduce the population of manual journal entries and recurring corrections within the portfolio by resolving root causes in master data, system configuration and interfaces rather than repeating downstream fixes.
- Contribute to finance transformation and digital initiatives, including the application of automation and AI tooling to close, reconciliation and reporting processes.
- Maintain standard operating procedures for the assigned processes and support knowledge transfer and cross-training within the team and to the accounting competency centres.
- Support system implementations, upgrades and process changes affecting the portfolio, including user acceptance testing and post-implementation validation.
We know skills and competencies show up in many ways and can be based on your life experience. If you do not necessarily meet all the requirements that are listed below, we still encourage you to apply for the position.
Role Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field.
- 2-5 years of experience in Audit or Assurance, preferably with a Big Four public accounting firm.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Preferred: CPA certification or active pursuit of CPA.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment, analyze complex issues, and communicate recommendations effectively.
- Proven ability to partner with stakeholders across Finance and the business.
- Experience with Oracle is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Interest in leveraging technology, automation, and AI tools to improve finance processes.
