Functional Safety for AI – Technical Lead
A leading technology company is developing next-generation AI-enabled systems for the automotive industry and is building a dedicated team focused on making AI-based functionality safe, certifiable and deployable. We are looking for a senior technical leader to drive the functional safety strategy for AI across complex embedded systems and turn emerging safety concepts into practical engineering solutions.
You will own the execution of AI safety across multiple projects, translating a central Safety & AI roadmap into innovation initiatives and defining how AI-driven features behave safely within real-world systems. This includes developing system safety concepts, converting AI behaviour into safety requirements and mechanisms, and ensuring appropriate fail-safe or fail-operational behaviour.
Working across architecture, safety, NPI and application teams, you will lead the adoption of new safety approaches and help integrate standards such as ISO 26262 and emerging AI safety practices into development processes. You will also oversee model validation, robustness testing, fault injection and runtime safety mechanisms, while providing technical direction to an innovation team and feeding project learnings back into the wider Safety & AI strategy.
Ideal candidates will have knowledge of:
• 10+ years of experience architecting, designing and validating safety-critical embedded systems
• Extensive automotive functional safety experience
• Intimate knowledge of ISO 26262
• Understanding of IEC 61508 and related functional safety standards is advantageous
• Strong understanding of AI/ML safety within embedded systems
• Experience defining system safety concepts, safety requirements and safety mechanisms
• Experience with fail-safe and fail-operational architectures
• Model validation, robustness testing and fault injection
• Runtime safety monitoring and mitigation mechanisms
• Ability to bridge system architecture, functional safety and engineering execution
• Experience delivering complex automotive projects from concept through validation
• Technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams
• Experience managing or mentoring engineers is advantageous
• Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related discipline
