Job Taxonomy:GSE BUILD TECHNICIAN IIIJob Title:GSE BUILD TECHNICIAN IIIJob Category:GSEJob Description:
Summary
The GSE Build Technician III is a senior hands-on technical contributor responsible for complex fabrication, installation, troubleshooting, modification, and verification of Ground Support Equipment supporting rocket production, testing, and launch operations.
This role independently executes complex mechanical and fluid-system work with limited supervision. Establish work sequence, identify dependencies and constraints, and drive assigned objectives to completion. They provide technical direction and mentorship to less-experienced technicians while maintaining high standards for safety, workmanship, configuration control, and documentation.
The role works closely with Engineering, Test, Launch, and Quality to resolve technical and integration issues.
Responsibilities
- Lead and execute complex fabrication, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, modification, and commissioning of launch pad, test stand, production, and facility GSE.
- Independently execute complex mechanical and fluid-system builds from engineering documentation. Establish the work sequence required to drive assigned objectives from initial preparation through final verification and turnover.
- Identify predecessor, successor, and parallel work associated with assigned activities.
- Identify incomplete prerequisite work before it impacts execution.
- Anticipate material shortages, installation conflicts, access limitations, documentation discrepancies, tooling constraints, and other potential blockers.
- Provide hands-on technical directions to Level I and Level II technicians.
- Fabricate and install complex tubing, piping, valving, instrumentation, mechanical panels, support, and related fluid-system hardware.
- Perform or direct advanced tube layout, routing, bending, fitting, support placement, and installation. Correlate information across multiple engineering documents to determine system configuration and required end state.
- Review tubing and piping installations for buildability, serviceability, routing, cleanliness, workmanship, and compliance with engineering intent.
- Read and interpret complex P&IDs, mechanical drawings, assembly drawings, fabrication drawings, schematics, specifications, procedures, and related engineering documentation.
- Identify discrepancies between drawings, documentation, hardware, and field configuration.
- Stop affected work when engineering requirements cannot be satisfied and coordinate resolution through the appropriate technical organization.
- Provide detailed constructability and operability feedback to GSE and Launch engineers during design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning.
- Troubleshoot complex mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, high-pressure, cryogenic, and fluid-system problems and root-cause techniques rather than relying on uncontrolled trial-and-error repair. Raise the technical capability and effectiveness of the technicians working around them.
- Support system verification, hydrostatic proof testing, pneumatic testing, leak checking, flushing, cleaning, functional testing, and commissioning when trained and qualified.
- Understand the hazards associated with stored energy, pressurized systems, hazardous commodities, cryogenic systems, and mechanical operations.
- Reinforce established controls including exclusion zones, barricades, pressure-system procedures, LOTO, PPE, FOD, ESD, cleanliness, and tool control.
- Exercise stop-work authority when technical, quality, or safety requirements are not adequately understood or controlled.
- Maintain and reinforce high workmanship standards for component orientation, tubing and piping routing, support installation, fasteners, torque, seals, cleanliness, accessibility, documentation, and final configuration.
- Ensure discrepancies and incomplete work are identified before hardware is presented as complete.
- Support rigging, crane, lift, equipment-moving, and other material-handling operations when trained and qualified.
- Support the development of lift or execution plans within the limits of technician authority.
- Ensure completed work has sufficient work-log, photographic, inspection, and configuration documentation for traceability.
- Independently navigate JIRA and associated technical-documentation systems.Review associated work tickets to identify dependencies, parallel opportunities, and downstream impacts.
- Support accurate transition of completed hardware from Build to the applicable Test, Launch, Operations, or customer organization.
- Mentor Level I and Level II technicians. Teach both the proper execution method and the technical reasoning behind the requirement.
- Evaluate developing technicians during hands-on work and provide professional corrective feedback.
- Support daily work planning and technician assignment when requested by Lead or supervisory personnel.
- Lead small technical work groups or execution activities in the absence of higher-level leadership when assigned.
- Identify opportunities to improve fabrication methods, tooling, work sequencing, work-area organization, documentation, safety, and overall build efficiency.
- Assist in development and refinement of procedures, work instructions, OJT, standard work, and technician training material.
- Partner with Engineering, Test, Launch, Quality, and leadership to resolve difficult field and integration problems.
- Support Test and Launch operating activities within appropriate qualification and organizational authority.
