The Opportunity
Our client is an ambitious, well-funded technology company building AI-powered solutions to transform how accounting, taxation and payroll work for SMEs across Europe.
As a Senior AI Engineer, you’ll build intelligent, reliable AI systems that help businesses navigate complex financial and tax operations. You’ll have significant ownership over both what gets built and how it gets built, balancing speed, experimentation and engineering quality.
This is a hybrid role based in Berlin, with regular time in the office to collaborate closely with the wider team.
What You'll Do
- Build and deploy AI agents that automate accounting, payroll and tax-related workflows
- Develop LLM-based systems using modern frameworks, prompt engineering and robust quality controls
- Integrate AI capabilities with existing software, systems and APIs
- Optimise AI features for performance, cost, scalability and reliability
- Take ownership of projects from initial concept through to production
- Work closely with product, engineering and domain experts to continuously improve AI solutions
What Makes the Role Interesting
- High ownership: You'll have a genuine opportunity to shape both the product and technical approach
- Fast feedback loops: Work closely with domain experts and customers to understand problems and iterate quickly
- Pragmatic engineering culture: Ship, learn and improve without compromising on quality
- Meaningful AI applications: Build systems that solve real-world, complex business problems rather than purely experimental use cases
Your Experience
We're looking for someone with:
- 5+ years of experience across software engineering and AI
- Experience working in an early-stage startup or scale-up environment where you've had to wear multiple hats
- Hands-on experience building with LLMs such as OpenAI, Anthropic or similar
- Strong understanding of LLM APIs, prompt engineering, structured outputs and agent frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph or equivalent
- Experience integrating REST APIs and cloud services
- Experience with testing, QA and evaluating AI systems
- A strong interest in AI-assisted software development and experience using tools such as Cursor, Claude or similar in your day-to-day workflow
- The ability to work comfortably with ambiguity, take ownership and manage multiple projects independently
- A practical, hands-on approach — you're someone who enjoys building and shipping rather than just designing solutions
Particularly Relevant Experience
- A background in traditional software engineering followed by a deliberate move into AI
- Strong Python skills and the ability to build production-quality software, not just work with prompts
Interview Process
The client aims to move quickly, with the potential for the process to be completed in under two weeks for the right candidate.
- Introductory call with the Talent team
- Technical/deep-dive interview with the CTO
- On-site coding interview with the engineering team in Berlin
- Final conversation with a company founder
What's on Offer
- Competitive, above-market salary
- High level of autonomy and direct access to senior leadership
- Significant ownership over the AI products and systems you build
- Access to leading AI development tools and platforms
- Internal infrastructure and tooling designed to support AI and agent development at scale
- 28 days' annual leave, plus additional half-days around the Christmas period
- Choice of a fitness/wellness membership or public transport benefit
