President & Chief Executive Officer

Coalition Against Bigger Trucks (CABT) Washington, D.C.

Base Salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience - $250,000 - $300,000 base salary with room for bonus compensation.

About CABT

The Coalition Against Bigger Trucks (CABT) is a national coalition of law enforcement, first responders, safety advocates, labor organizations, trucking interests, railroads, suppliers, taxpayer and consumer organizations, and other stakeholders working to oppose increases in federal and state truck size and weight limits.

For more than three decades, CABT has been a leading voice on truck size and weight policy. With a pending surface transportation reauthorization bill and renewed efforts to increase federal truck weight limits creating a consequential legislative environment, CABT’s new leadership will have an opportunity to build on the organization’s strong foundation and shape its next chapter as a more nimble, politically focused advocacy organization.

CABT seeks a President & Chief Executive Officer to lead this next chapter.

The Opportunity

The President & CEO will serve as CABT's chief executive and principal strategist. Based in Washington, D.C., the President will lead the coalition's federal advocacy strategy, congressional engagement, coalition management, organizational operations, and fundraising.

This is first and foremost a senior government affairs and advocacy position. CABT seeks an experienced Washington leader who understands Congress and has demonstrated an ability to influence the legislative process as an outside advocate.

Working closely with the Board of Directors and coalition partners, the President will lead an integrated approach combining direct lobbying, coalition advocacy, grassroots and grasstops mobilization, communications, and political intelligence.

Key Responsibilities

Advocacy & Strategy

- Serve as CABT's principal representative before Congress and the Administration.

- Develop and execute a bicameral bipartisan strategy to prevent increases in federal truck size and weight limits.

- Build and maintain strong relationships with Members of Congress, committee leadership, senior congressional staff, and other policymakers.

- Anticipate legislative threats and opportunities and develop proactive strategies around committee, floor, and conference action.

- Build and support a bipartisan network of congressional champions.

- Provide the Board and coalition partners with political intelligence, strategic recommendations, and assessments of the legislative environment.

- Coordinate with and support state-level partners responding to truck size and weight proposals, ensuring alignment with CABT’s broader federal advocacy strategy.

Integrated Advocacy & Coalition Leadership

- Integrate government affairs, field organizing, grassroots, communications, research, and coalition engagement around a unified strategy.

- Mobilize coalition partners and influential constituents in priority states and congressional districts.

- Strengthen CABT's relationships with key validators, particularly law enforcement, first responders, highway safety advocates, state and local officials, labor, trucking, and transportation stakeholders.

- Recruit new organizations and voices that broaden CABT's political reach and credibility.

- Coordinate with communications and field partners to ensure outside advocacy reinforces CABT's direct lobbying efforts.

Organizational Leadership & Fundraising

- Lead CABT's overall strategy, personnel, operations, budget, and organizational performance.

- Work closely with the Board of Directors to establish priorities and measure progress.

- Oversee staff, consultants, and outside partners.

- Maintain strong relationships with CABT's existing donors while broadening financial participation among coalition members and aligned organizations.

- Ensure CABT's resources are focused on activities that maximize political and advocacy impact.

Candidate Qualifications

The successful candidate will be an accomplished Washington government affairs professional with the experience, relationships, and political judgment to lead a sophisticated national advocacy organization.

Candidates should have:

- 10+ years of relevant professional experience in Congress, government affairs, public policy, political advocacy, or association leadership.

- Professional experience working on Capitol Hill, with a strong understanding of congressional procedure, committees, leadership, legislative strategy, and effective advocacy.

- A demonstrated record of personally engaging and lobbying Members of Congress and senior staff.

- Strong bipartisan and bicameral relationships and the ability to build new ones .

- Experience developing and executing strategies around consequential or politically challenging legislative issues.

- Demonstrated coalition-building and management skills.

- Experience managing staff, consultants, budgets, and outside partners.

- Strong political judgment and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Experience in transportation, infrastructure, highway safety, freight, trucking, or rail policy is beneficial but not required. Political sophistication, congressional experience, relationships, and a demonstrated record of effective advocacy are more important than prior subject-matter specialization.

Leadership Profile

CABT seeks a hands-on political strategist who understands how Washington actually works. The President should be comfortable personally engaging Members of Congress, counting votes, identifying champions and pressure points, and using coalition partners, constituents, communications, and grassroots advocacy to influence legislative outcomes.

The successful candidate will also be a strong coalition builder and organizational leader capable of bringing diverse partners together around a common strategy and positioning CABT for long-term success.

Compensation & Location
