Role Overview

eNGINE is looking for Senior Application Support Engineers to join a team supporting critical enterprise applications in a financial services environment.

This is a hands-on application support position for someone who enjoys getting into the details when something breaks. You'll work with production issues, investigate application and database problems, read and debug Java code, and partner with development and infrastructure teams to get issues resolved.

This isn't a traditional help desk or ticket-management role. You'll need to be comfortable coding, troubleshooting backend applications, working with databases, and figuring out why something isn't working.

The environment is primarily Java, Spring Boot, Angular, Oracle, and Azure, with a strong emphasis on backend application support and database troubleshooting.

There are two available schedules: 7:00 AM–4:00 PM and 11:00 AM–7:00 PM. Candidates who are comfortable working either schedule will receive preference.

You'll also participate in an on-call rotation approximately one weekend out of every five. Most weekend activity is related to planned maintenance, releases, or upgrades and typically requires only a few hours of work.

What You'll Be Doing

- Investigate and resolve production application issues, working from initial ticket through root-cause identification and resolution.

- Dig into Java and Spring Boot applications to understand failures, identify defects, and help implement permanent fixes.

- Analyze database problems, including slow queries, deadlocks, execution plans, stored procedures, and overall database performance.

- Partner with software developers, infrastructure engineers, and other technical teams when issues cross application or platform boundaries.

- Monitor application health and performance and investigate trends before they become larger production problems.

- Review application logs, monitoring data, code, configurations, and system behavior to determine what's actually happening.

- Identify recurring support issues and look for opportunities to automate repetitive troubleshooting or operational tasks.

- Maintain useful troubleshooting documentation, technical procedures, and knowledge articles so the team can resolve issues more efficiently.

- Support application releases, maintenance activities, and upgrades, including occasional participation in the weekend on-call rotation.

- Look for ways to improve application reliability, performance, scalability, security, and availability.

- Use automation and DevOps practices to make application support more efficient and reduce manual intervention.

- Explore practical uses of AI and automation, including AI agents and advanced prompting, to improve troubleshooting and operational workflows.

What We're Looking For

- 6+ years of experience in software development, application support engineering, production support, or a closely related technical role.

- Strong hands-on experience with Java and Spring Boot, including the ability to read existing code, understand application behavior, and troubleshoot issues beyond simple scripting.

- Strong SQL and database skills, with experience investigating performance issues and troubleshooting complex database problems.

- Experience with Oracle databases and the ability to work comfortably with queries, execution plans, stored procedures, functions, locking, and performance tuning.

- Experience working with Angular and understanding how frontend applications interact with backend services.

- Experience working in Azure or another major cloud environment.

- Familiarity with application monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk, AppDynamics, or similar platforms.

- Experience with Linux/Unix environments and shell scripting.

- Understanding of application servers and technologies such as Tomcat.

- Familiarity with job scheduling, application configurations, and the types of dependencies that can impact production systems.

- Experience working in Agile and DevOps environments, including CI/CD, automation, configuration management, and release processes.

- Strong troubleshooting instincts and the ability to stay focused when working through complex production issues.

- Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with developers, infrastructure teams, business partners, and other stakeholders.

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field is preferred, or equivalent professional experience.

Nice to Have

- Experience in financial services, banking, securities, or another highly regulated environment.

- Experience with Kafka, Docker, Ansible, Python, AWS, or similar technologies.

- Familiarity with Site Reliability Engineering principles and production application reliability practices.

- Experience identifying opportunities to automate operational processes and building tools or scripts to eliminate repetitive work.

- Experience using AI tools to accelerate development, troubleshooting, or support activities.

- Hands-on experience configuring AI agents or using advanced prompting techniques with tools such as Microsoft Copilot.

Why This Role

This is a strong opportunity for a Java developer or application support engineer who wants to stay technical while working on real production systems. You'll have the opportunity to write and understand code, troubleshoot complex backend issues, work directly with databases, and make meaningful improvements to application reliability.

The team is looking for people who enjoy solving problems—not simply moving tickets from one queue to another.
