Senior Systems Engineer
Location: Oxfordshire
About the position
Our client is a technology business developing complex communications systems for the space sector.
The Senior Systems Engineer will work across requirements, architecture, integration and verification of multidisciplinary systems, with responsibility for allocated systems or subsystems through development, qualification and operational use.
This is a broad systems engineering role with a practical element. Alongside requirements, modelling and technical documentation, you will work directly with the system during testing, demonstrations and technical investigations.
What you will be working on
You will support the development and delivery of complex communications and electro-optical systems, including:
- Owning allocated systems or subsystems, including specification and verification activities.
- Defining system and subsystem requirements and developing architectures, designs and models.
- Planning and carrying out verification, qualification and operational demonstrations, including interoperability activities.
- Supporting system integration, deployment and operation, including hands-on testing and troubleshooting.
- Identifying technical risks and issues, analysing system behaviour and evaluating engineering options.
- Developing and maintaining technical documentation including interface definitions, operational procedures, system models and technical budgets.
- Coordinating subsystem developments and technical suppliers or subcontractors where required.
- Contributing to systems engineering processes, including MBSE and associated engineering tools.
The Senior Systems Engineer may also lead significant subsystem developments and provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers.
What our client is looking for
For this Senior Systems Engineer position, our client is looking for someone with experience in:
- Systems engineering of complex communications, electro-optical, electromechanical or embedded software systems.
- Requirements definition, system architecture and integration.
- Verification and validation across the engineering lifecycle.
- Practical system testing, troubleshooting and data analysis.
- Systems engineering processes, with exposure to MBSE, SysML or similar modelling approaches.
- Producing system documentation, interface definitions and technical models.
- Working across multiple engineering disciplines and with external technical partners.
Experience in satellite communications, optical communications, high-data-rate systems, precision optics, lasers, tracking or control systems would be useful. Exposure to space engineering standards, system security, networking, Python-based analysis or automation may also be relevant.
A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Systems Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or a related engineering discipline is required, together with at least five years of relevant systems engineering experience.
Why consider this role?
The position offers broad involvement across the lifecycle of specialist communications hardware, combining system architecture and requirements work with integration, verification and hands-on operation. There is also scope to lead significant subsystem developments while remaining technically involved.
Benefits include 25 days' annual leave plus bank holidays, professional development opportunities and equity options.
