Job Title: Welding Specialist
Job Description
This role supports a large-scale nuclear program by providing specialized welding expertise for the maintenance, upgrade, and life extension of nuclear generating assets. You will develop and oversee welding procedures, support qualification activities, and guide field execution in a highly regulated environment. Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering, construction, and quality teams, you will help ensure that all welding activities meet stringent technical, safety, and quality requirements throughout the life of the project.
Responsibilities
- Develop and support welding techniques, procedures, and applications based on project specifications, material properties, and industry best practices.
- Create, review, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), Procedure Qualification Records (PQR), and Welder Performance Qualifications (WPQ).
- Provide technical guidance to welding personnel, supervisors, and engineering teams on welding processes, equipment selection, consumables, and joint configurations.
- Monitor field welding activities to ensure strict compliance with approved procedures, quality requirements, and project specifications.
- Verify proper configuration, calibration, and operation of welding equipment, tooling, and associated systems.
- Review welding data, inspection reports, and production documentation after completion of work activities to confirm conformance with project and code requirements.
- Investigate and resolve welding-related issues, including equipment performance concerns, process deviations, and nonconformances.
- Support troubleshooting and corrective actions, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the welding program.
- Support welder training, qualification, and ongoing technical development programs to maintain a high level of competency in the field.
- Interpret engineering drawings, fabrication packages, technical specifications, codes, standards, and other project documentation relevant to welding activities.
- Collaborate closely with construction, quality, engineering, and project management teams to ensure coordinated and successful project execution.
- Stay current with emerging welding technologies, processes, automation, and industry innovations and assess their applicability to project needs.
- Actively support execution of the overall welding program during major component removal and replacement activities within the refurbishment scope.
Essential Skills
- A welding technologist with a diploma or degree in welding technology or a closely related discipline.
- Completion of a 2-year or 3-year welding technology program that provides a solid mix of practical and theoretical knowledge.
- Proven experience in developing, qualifying, and implementing Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR).
- Hands-on experience with ASME Code Section III and Section IX requirements, including non-nuclear applications under Section IX.
- Demonstrated knowledge and application of CSA W59 welding standards.
- Experience supporting nuclear refurbishment, nuclear construction, or other highly regulated industrial projects.
- Ability to interpret and apply project quality requirements and technical requirements related to welds and welding procedures.
- Experience in welding manufacturing and fabrication environments with a focus on quality assurance and welding engineering.
- Proficiency in interpreting and applying welding codes, standards, and specifications from CSA, CWB, ASME, and AWS.
- Capability to guide and support field execution and construction activities on large capital projects, particularly for welding-related scopes.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- CWB Welding Supervisor certification.
- Familiarity with ASME Section III and IX beyond minimum requirements, including practical application in complex projects.
- Knowledge of CSA, CWB, and AWS welding standards and their integration into project-specific procedures and quality programs.
- Experience with orbital welding equipment and automated welding systems.
- Previous experience supporting large-scale refurbishment projects involving removal and replacement of major components such as steam generators.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with construction, engineering, quality, and project management teams.
- Ability to stay current with emerging welding technologies and industry best practices and to apply them appropriately within a regulated environment.
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract position based out of Pickering, ON.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $31.00 - $52.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
