We are seeking a highly skilled Sr. UI/UX Developer/Architect with extensive experience building and maintaining enterprise design systems, deep expertise in accessibility standards, and excellent communication skills.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing accessible, reusable, and scalable UI components that meet federal WCAG 2.1 accessibility requirements, including AAA-level requirements where applicable.
This contractor will support multiple high-visibility State of Iowa systems, including DNR, HHS, IWD, and the River AI Chatbot, with a focus on meeting federal accessibility requirements and establishing sustainable design-system practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Build, document, and maintain scalable enterprise design systems and reusable component libraries.
- Develop accessible wrapper components using HTML, SASS, and Angular.
- Ensure UI components comply with WCAG 2.1/AAA, Section 508, ARIA, and semantic HTML requirements.
- Use Storybook for component development, documentation, testing, and collaboration.
- Conduct accessibility testing, audits, code reviews, and UX reviews.
- Collaborate with developers and cross-functional teams to establish accessibility and design-system best practices.
- Provide accessibility and UX support across major State of Iowa applications.
- Help establish consistent, reusable, and accessible front-end standards across multiple enterprise systems.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of professional front-end development experience.
- Proven experience establishing and implementing enterprise design systems from scratch.
- Strong experience developing reusable component libraries and high-level wrapper components.
- Strong knowledge of WCAG 2.1/AAA, Section 508, ARIA, semantic HTML, and accessibility testing.
- Proficiency with:
- HTML
- SASS/SCSS
- Angular
- Storybook
- Strong UX and accessible UI design knowledge.
- Experience with USWDS (U.S. Web Design System) or a comparable enterprise design system.
- Excellent technical communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with .NET / MVC / SQL.
- Understanding of backend integration and front-end development within a .NET environment.
