AI Transformation Engineer – Agentic AI & Internal Tooling
6-month contract | Competitive day rate | Hybrid London – typically 2 days per week (flexible)
We’re working with an international cloud-based SaaS business that is investing significantly in becoming an AI-first organisation.
They are looking for a highly capable, hands-on AI engineer to build and embed a portfolio of internal AI tools, workflow agents and reusable skills. Many of these tools will support go-to-market teams across sales, marketing and customer success.
This isn’t a strategy, advisory or people-management role. You’ll personally identify the problems worth solving, make pragmatic build-versus-buy decisions, design the technical approach, write the code, integrate the relevant systems and take each solution through to production adoption.
The challenge is finding someone who can genuinely do both sides of the role:
- Build technically robust, production-grade AI tools and agentic workflows
- Communicate credibly with senior executives and turn ambiguous business problems into practical solutions
The opportunity
You’ll operate with significant autonomy and visibility, reporting to the Chief of Staff and working closely with the CEO, VP of Engineering and senior commercial leaders.
The business already has several AI-enabled tools in use. Your role will be to assess the existing landscape, identify where separate tools should be consolidated and create a more coherent, secure and maintainable AI infrastructure.
You’ll also gain exposure to the organisation’s investors and wider portfolio, making this an excellent opportunity to lead a genuine business-wide AI transformation and leave with a substantial portfolio of work.
What you’ll deliver
- A portfolio of production-ready AI tools, agents and workflow automations
- Discovery sessions with senior leaders across sales, marketing, customer success and other functions
- A prioritised delivery backlog focused on measurable commercial value
- Clear and commercially grounded build-versus-buy decisions
- Secure integrations with internal systems, APIs and third-party platforms
- A cohesive technical architecture for internal AI tooling
- Adoption plans, usage tracking and continuous iteration based on feedback
- Measurable reductions in manual effort, operating cost or time spent
- Clear documentation and handover to permanent owners at the end of the engagement
What we’re looking for
- A genuinely hands-on AI engineer who can independently design, build, test and deploy solutions
- Experience delivering production agentic AI tools using Claude, MCP or comparable technologies
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and a clear understanding of architecture
- Experience integrating APIs, connectors, business systems and trusted data sources
- The ability to assess architecture, security, scalability and maintainability—not simply assemble tools
- Sound judgement when deciding whether to build, buy, integrate or retire a solution
- A product mindset: identifying the real problem, prioritising the highest-value opportunity and iterating until adoption sticks
- Confidence running discovery sessions with C-suite and senior departmental stakeholders
- The communication skills to challenge ideas, explain trade-offs and secure stakeholder commitment
- A strong approach to data security, least-privilege access, auditability and AI governance
- The discipline to reject ideas that won’t deliver sufficient value
This role would suit someone who remains close to the code but is equally comfortable sitting with a CMO, CCO or CEO, understanding their objectives and constructively challenging how AI should be applied.
