About The Role
We built three working AI and automation systems over the past year: a
Confluence audit engine that classified nearly 7,000 pages in a single run, a documentation
agent, and an AI assistant that answers IT and policy questions in Slack for the whole
company.
They work. They were built alongside day jobs by people learning as they went. Now they
need to become supported services that thousands of employees rely on — and the team
that runs them needs to grow beyond the people who built them.
That is this job.
You will be the first dedicated engineer in a new central function whose purpose is not only
to build automations, but to make other IT teams capable of building their own. People rotate
into the Hub from Service Desk, Operations and elsewhere for three-month residencies. You
will build alongside them and teach them as you go.
If you like taking working prototypes and making them boring, reliable and safe for other
people to extend, this is a good job. If you would rather start from a blank repository, it isn't.What you'll do
You’ll work at the intersection of technology, processes and people - identifying opportunities
where AI and automation can simplify work, improve efficiency and enable new ways of
working. From exploring an opportunity and building a prototype to deploying and improving
solutions in production, you’ll have the opportunity to make a tangible impact.
Take our existing systems from prototype to production: deployment pipelines,
monitoring, alerting, backup and restore, documented runbooks
Build and maintain automations in n8n, Postgres and AWS, running self-hosted in our
own datacenter
Design and run the environment structure — development, test, production — so
people can learn and build without touching live systems
Pair with Residents from other IT teams and bring them from observing to building
independently
Own the reliability of services that Service Desk and the wider company depend on
Work with Security, Privacy and Enterprise Architecture as our automation footprint
grows
Help evaluate what platform we should be on longer term, as part of a planned
evaluation with Enterprise Architecture
Monitor and continuously improve implemented solutions, with attention to quality,
reliability and business value.
Your Skills & Experience
Strong PostgreSQL. Our knowledge layer is a structured Postgres schema with SQL
functions, not a vector store. You should be comfortable writing and optimising real SQL —
functions, indexes, query plans, migrations — and able to explain why a query is slow.
JavaScript / TypeScript. Our automation logic lives in JS, and custom platform nodes are
TypeScript.
Containers and deployment. Docker, and experience running something in production
rather than only building it. Kubernetes or Compose depending on what you've worked with.
CI/CD and git discipline. You'll be building the path that lets people promote work from
development to production safely.
Observability. Logging, metrics and alerting. You should have a clear answer to "how do we
find out something is broken before a user tells us.
API integration in the real world. Rate limits, retries, backoff, idempotency, OAuth token
refresh. Our systems talk to Confluence, Slack, Google Workspace and LLM providers, and
all of them will fail in interesting ways.Working with LLM APIs in production. Not prompt engineering — engineering around
non-determinism. Handling malformed responses, validating structured output, retry strategy,
managing token cost, and knowing whether a change made results better or worse.
What would make you stand out
n8n or a comparable automation platform (Workato, Power Automate, Tines,
Activepieces)
Python
Experience in IT operations or service management
Having mentored or taught engineers earlier in their journey
Working with Security or Privacy teams on access control and data handling
